74 ■ THE WOLFPACKER BASKETBALL PREVIEW 2016-17 ■ Maverick Rowan 24 • G/F So. • Fort Lauderdale, Fla. • 6-7 • 220 Analysis: After graduating early from high school and enrolling at NC State last summer, Rowan made an impressive debut. As advertised, he proved to be a dangerous shooter on the perimeter. He reputedly has grown a little more since last year and is stronger, which should help him improve defensively and hold up better physi- cally throughout the season. Career Highlights: Tied for second on the team in scoring during his freshman season with 12.9 points per game … Made 81 three-pointers, a new freshman school record … Ranked fifth in the ACC with 2.5 made threes per game … Was rated as a four-star prospect out of high school by Rivals.com … Scored a career-high 27 points against Bucknell … Had 24 points, including six three-pointers, in the ACC Tournament win over Wake Forest … Hit the game-winning basket as time expired against Boston College … In three seasons of high school basketball, totaled 2,383 career points … Averaged 28.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game for Cardinal Gibbons High in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as a junior, leading team to 32-1 record and state 5A title … Voted Florida's 5A Player of the Year … Was named Pennsylvania's 1A Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2014 while playing for Lincoln Park High School in Midland, Pa., after averaging 24.3 points per game and leading his team to a state title. Coach's Corner: "I thought he had a phenomenal freshman year. We asked him to do a lot for a guy who should have been a high school senior. … He's grown an inch or two since he's arrived on campus. He's close to 6-7 or 6-8 right now." — Mark Gottfried Personal: Management major … His father, Ron Rowan, played college basketball at St. John's and was a third-round pick in the 1986 NBA Draft … First name is inspired by the Tom Cruise character in the 1986 blockbuster movie "Top Gun." Who is the best dunker on the team? Dennis [Smith Jr.]. What's your favorite magazine? Sports Illustrated. How many pair of shoes do you think you currently have? Over 100.
