Spring Surge Nets Six Commitments FOOTBALL RECRUITING BY JASON SAPP otre Dame is off to one of its fastest starts on the recruiting trail with a dozen verbal commitments through May 22, and much of that had to do with a col- lective effort by the coaching staff during the program's junior day event on March 24. N The Irish landed six pledges within four days, unofficially marking the school's best haul in that duration of time. The prospects that joined the class fol- lowing the event included four-star offen- sive tackles Hunter Bivin of Owensboro, Ky., and Colin McGovern of New Lenox, Ill., (March 24); four-star offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey of Philadelphia and four-star quarterback Malik Zaire of Day- ton, Ohio, (March 25); four-star cornerback Rashad Kinlaw of Absecon, N.J., (March 26) and three-star wide receiver Corey Rob- inson of San Antonio (March 27). Despite the quick jump in the size of the class, the No. 8 haul in the 247Sports 2013 team recruiting rankings still has some work to do with approximately eight to 10 more scholarships available. Enter the spring evaluation period. During the six-week stretch that lasts from April 15-May 31, college coaches are allowed to be on the road for four weeks to get a closer look at recruits that have com- mitted, ones that have been offered, those that are on the cusp of being offered and new targets that may be worthy of moving Kentucky native Hunter Bivin was one of six players that committed to Notre Dame following the team's junior day in late March. He and two other four-star tackles were in that haul. PHOTO COURTESY 247SPORTS up the big board. Coaches are allowed to take two visits to a prospect's high school during the period, one for an academic evaluation and the other for an athletic review. The assistant coach will typically meet with the player's high school coaches to learn more about the prospect and find out where their re- spective program stands in the process. The athletic evaluation can be anything from watching a spring practice to sitting in the stands for a seven-on-seven workout JUNE/JULY 2012 82
