38 THE WOLVERINE DECEMBER 2016   MICHIGAN FOOTBALL been ailing him, attributing it to "sea- sons changing." "People made it sound a little dra- matic," he said. "I was a little sick. Made it work. Made it happen. I missed a little [practice] physically, but mentally I was there all week. We made it work … just a little hiccup and made it through it." Cole said he just rested, hydrated and took his medicine all week to get ready for the game. Head coach Jim Harbaugh quipped he was going to have his players drink more milk and eat better to ensure his guys remained healthy down the stretch. Cole played with his typical edge against the Spartans. He and Michigan State junior defensive lineman Malik McDowell had a number of shoving matches and did plenty of jawing dur- ing the game. "It's just a rivalry game. Tensions are high," Cole said. "The game has always been like that. There's not a lot of like between the two teams. He's an- other good player, and we were chal- lenging each other." Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio, meanwhile, contacted the Big Ten about the Bush hit and won- dered why a review for targeting was not initiated by a replay official. Un- der a new NCAA rule this year, replay officials can call targeting penalties even when an on-field official hadn't thrown a flag. The Big Ten responded in a state- ment that the hit was legal and no punishment was warranted. Bush ap- peared to lead with his shoulder and made initial contact with Frey's. At the end of the game, Michigan's players emerged without any serious injuries and ready to battle Maryland the following week. The physical na- ture of the MSU contest didn't prevent them from blowing the Terrapins out, 59-3. FRESHMAN RECEIVER KEKOA CRAWFORD MAKING HIS PRESENCE FELT Michigan's freshman receivers haven't caught a lot of passes this year, but that isn't the only measure of their contributions. Floridian Eddie Mc- Doom has become the master of the jet sweep, racking up 154 rushing yards through the first nine games, while Californian Kekoa Crawford — known as Dylan Crawford when he signed — has become a lights-out blocker. Crawford has become known to his teammates as one of the more relent- less downfield blockers. "When you look out there and you see him blocking 30 yards downfield, that's what gets me real riled up," fifth-year senior defensive tackle Ryan Glasgow said. "Some dude just lay- ing it out there, blocking some DB … really just getting in his kitchen and laying the boom. That's what gets me real fired up. You see a freshman going out there, playing with the effort that's expected at Michigan." Last year, wide receiver Maurice Ways earned his way on to the field as a redshirt freshman in large part because he was willing to block. Craw- ford has earned his playing time much the same way, head coach Jim Har- baugh calling him "one of our better blockers as just a freshman" following a 59-3 win over Maryland in which he OFFENSE Pos.
