68 THE WOLVERINE DECEMBER 2016   OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE World Championships Dec. 6-11 in Wind- sor, Canada; associate head coach Rick Bishop will serve as an assistant coach with the women's team … Haughey took home top honors in four different events Nov. 4-5 at the UVA Aquatic and Fitness Center, including a victory over Virginia's Leah Smith (U.S. Olympian) in the 200- yard freestyle (1:45.35) … U-M defeated Penn State, 270-83, at the event, but fell to No. 6 Virginia, 196.5-156.5. — Austin Fox MEN'S SOCCER (4-11-4, 1-6-1 BIG TEN) Michigan defeated Oakland 5-1 Oct. 25 — the five goals were a season high and the third-most in a match in program his- tory … On Oct. 27, the College Sports In- formation Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced that sophomore midfielder Ivo Cerda was named to the Academic All-District Five team; as a result, Cerda will next advance to the Academic All- America team ballot … Prior to its match with No. 1 Maryland Oct. 30, Michigan honored its seven seniors on the roster before falling 3-2 in double overtime … Junior goalie Evan Louro made 11 saves in that one; he was one away from match- ing the single-game school record … On Nov. 4, sophomore midfielder Francis At- uahene earned All-Big Ten first-team hon- ors, while senior defender Lars Eckenrode garnered second-team recognition and rookie forward Jack Hallahan earned an all-freshman honor … Michigan's season ended Nov. 6 with another 3-2 double- overtime loss to No. 1 Maryland in the Big Ten quarterfinals. — Austin Fox WOMEN'S SOCCER (10-5-5, 6-3-2 BIG TEN) Michigan honored its seven seniors Oct. 22 at U-M Soccer Stadium in the regular- season home finale, prior to a 2-1 loss to Ohio State … The contest resulted in Michigan's lone home defeat of the sea- son; the team finished with a 7-1-3 record at U-M Soccer Stadium … Redshirt soph- omore goalkeeper Sarah Jackson was named Big Ten Player of the Week Oct. 18 after combining for 18 saves and one goal allowed in two games the previous week; it was the second time she won the award this season … The Wolverines won their Big Ten regular-season finale Oct. 26 at Indiana in thrilling fashion, 3-2 … Michi- gan trailed 2-1 with less than 10 minutes left, but senior forward Nicky Waldeck and redshirt junior midfielder/forward Ani Sarkisian each scored a goal to help lead the team to victory … Sophomore forward Reilly Martin was named to the Academic All-District Five Team Oct. 27 … Waldeck, fellow senior Anna Soccorsi, Sarkisian and Martin each earned All-Big Ten second-team honors Oct. 28 … After being tied with Wisconsin, 1-1, through double overtime of the Big Ten quarter- finals Oct. 30, the Wolverines wound up defeating the Badgers, 4-2, in a shoot- out … Michigan concluded the season by earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013, but fell in its first game to Illinois State via shootout Nov. 12. — Austin Fox MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING On Oct. 31, fifth-year senior Luke Papen- dick, juniors Paul Powers, PJ Ransford and Evan White, and freshman Charlie Swan- son were selected to represent U-M at the USA College Challenge Nov. 12-13 at IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis … Swanson won the 400-yard individual medley in the special event that pitted Team USA vs. the Big Ten … Michigan earned the No. 6 ranking in the first edition of the CSCAA/ TYR Top 25 Coaches poll Oct. 26 … On Nov. 3, Powers and Ransford (along with junior Clara Smiddy of the women's team) were among 35 swimmers selected to rep- resent Team USA at the 2016 FINA World Championships Dec. 6-11 in Windsor, Can- ada; Powers will take part in the 50-meter freestyle, while Ransford will participate in the 1,500-meter freestyle … Michigan defeated No. 25 Virginia (203-140) and Penn State (217-126) Nov. 5 inside the UVA Aquatic and Fitness Center, extend- ing its dual-meet win streak to 55 … U-M won the 200-yard medley relay with a one-two finish, as freshman Alex Martin, senior Chris Klein, sophomore Jon Bur- kett and Papendick made up the winning team (1:28.86) … Michigan went one-two- three in the 1,000-yard freestyle (Ransford, senior Cameron Stitt and freshman Felix Aubock) and the 200-yard breaststroke (freshman Jacob Montague, Klein and Swanson), while junior Evan White won the 100-yard butterfly and Swanson won the 400-yard individual medley. — Austin Fox VOLLEYBALL (21-7, 10-6 BIG TEN) On Oct. 17, freshman setter MacKenzi Welsh earned her second straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor after av- eraging 10 assists per set with a .643 kill percentage during the previous week … Three players set career highs in Michi- gan's 3-2 victory over No. 9 Penn State Oct. 22, including sophomore outside hitter Carly Skjodt (27 kills), Welsh (67 as- sists) and freshman libero Tiffany Clark (20 digs) … The victory marked U-M's first over a top-10 team this season and also snapped Penn State's 15-match winning streak … The Maize and Blue's last vic- tory against a top-10 opponent also came against Penn State last November … Af- ter defeating Maryland Oct. 19 and No. 9 Penn State Oct. 22, Michigan jumped three spots to No. 13 in the AVCA Coaches Poll, garnering a season-high 797 votes … Following the victories, Welsh earned her third straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 12.2 as- sists per set with a .600 kill percentage against the Terrapins and Nittany Lions … After triumphs over Illinois Nov. 4 and Northwestern Nov. 5, Welsh garnered Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors for the fourth time in five weeks … Dou- ble-figure kill outings from junior middle blocker Claire Kieffer-Wright and fifth- year senior outside hitter Kelly Murphy helped Michigan earn a three-set sweep of Indiana Nov. 9, its first home sweep in conference play this season. — Austin Fox Sophomore outside hitter Carly Skjodt set a career high with 27 kills in Michigan's 3-2 victory over No. 9 Penn State Oct. 22, the team's first top-10 win of the season.
