Among other accom- plishments, they came away with a tie and a win in a two-game road series against third-ranked Notre Dame. Now, they're looking to carry that momentum into the Big Ten season. The Lions' 20-game conference schedule will begin with two games against last season's most vexing nemesis, Michigan. The Wolverines went 5-0 against Penn State last year, including a 7-2 decision in the semi2nals of the confer- ence tournament, a loss that ended the Lions' season. The defending tournament champs are looking pretty solid again this year, thanks to a highly productive six- player senior class, as well as an infusion of young talent. Forward Will Lockwood spearheads the latter group. In a two-game series with Michigan Tech, the freshman from Bloom2eld, Mich., scored two goals and added two assists. But the Nittany Lions have some impressive freshmen of their own, a contingent headlined by start- ing goalie Peyton Jones. And they'll be playing at Pegula; the games vs. Michigan are the last in a 10-game homestand that began last month vs. Canisius. – M.H. SCORECARD ADMINISTRATION Foley to spearhead athletic fundraising Joe Foley, whose fundraising expert- ise helped Maryland begin the renova- tion of Cole Field House, has been hired by Penn State as senior associate athletic director for advancement. A former collegiate student-athlete, Foley brings a demonstrated record of major gift and annual giving success to the Nittany Lions. At Penn State, Foley will direct all as- pects of fundraising and student-ath- lete alumni relations, providing vision and direction for all of the athletic de- partment's advancement efforts. He will oversee major gift fundraising and the Nittany Lion Club, which secures annual support from more than 22,000 donors each year and is one of the largest organizations of its kind. "We are thrilled to have Joe joining the Penn State family," athletic director Sandy Barbour said. "Joe has a demon- strated record of building relationships and strategically identifying resources that will assist in creating conditions for success for our student-athletes. He will be a great fit for Penn State and our community." During Foley's tenure at Maryland, he led the school's athletic fundraising ini- tiatives, including the Cole Field House renovation. Serving as the executive di- rector of the Terrapin Club Scholarship Fund, his team's accomplishments in- cluded securing more than 50 new major gift commitments of $50,000 or more, while growing the athletics an- nual fund by 38 percent over the past two years. Additionally, membership in the Terrapin Club's Directors Circle – donors who give $25,000 per year – in- creased by approximately 70 percent during that time. A native of Worcester, Mass., Foley was a four-year letterwinner on the Northeastern University track and field team, helping the Huskies win five America East Conference titles. ■ FOOTBALL 8-2, 6-1 SEPTEMBER 3 W KENT STATE............................................... 33-13 10 L at Pitt........................................................ 42-39 17 W TEMPLE..................................................... 34-27 24 L at Michigan................................................ 49-10 OCTOBER 1 W MINNESOTA........................................ 29-26 (OT) 8 W MARYLAND................................................ 38-14 22 W OHIO STATE................................................24-21 29 W at Purdue...................................................62-24 NOVEMBER 5 W IOWA......................................................... 41-14 12 W at Indiana.................................................. 45-31 19 at Rutgers................................................ 8 p.m. (BTN) 26 MICHIGAN STATE....................................................TBA WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL 19-8, 10-5 AUGUST 26 W WEST VIRGINIA...............................................3-0 27 W GEORGIA SOUTHERN...................................... 3-0 L NORTH CAROLINA...........................................3-2 SEPTEMBER 3-4 Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge at Colorado 3 L Colorado.................................................3-2 4 L Stanford................................................. 3-0 9-10 at Syracuse Classic 9 W Siena..................................................... 3-0 10 W Hofstra...................................................3-1 W at Syracuse............................................ 3-0 16-17 PENN STATE INVITATIONAL 16 W RHODE ISLAND....................................... 3-0 17 W HOWARD................................................ 3-0 W CLEMSON...............................................3-0 21 W at Rutgers......................................................3-0 25 W at Northwestern............................................. 3-0 30 W MICHIGAN STATE............................................ 3-0 OCTOBER 1 W MICHIGAN......................................................3-0 5 W MINNESOTA................................................... 3-2 8 W RUTGERS.......................................................3-0 14 W at Purdue.......................................................3-0 15 W at Indiana...................................................... 3-0 19 W OHIO STATE....................................................3-0 22 L at Michigan.................................................... 3-2 28 L at Wisconsin.................................................. 3-1 29 L at Minnesota..................................................3-0 NOVEMBER 4 L NEBRASKA.....................................................3-2 5 W IOWA............................................................. 3-0
