FIELD HOCKEY Nittany Lions fall in NCAA first round The fourth-seeded Nittany Lions lost to No. 14 Princeton, 2-1, in the 8rst round of the NCAA tournament Nov. 12 at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex. Sophomore Aurelia Meijer scored the lone goal for the Lions with less than four minutes le: in the game. "That was the best defense we've seen all year," head coach Charlene Morett- Curtiss said. "They did a phenomenal job of taking away lanes that we wanted to attack." Princeton got on the scoreboard 8rst in the second half, as Ryan McCarthy scored her 13th goal of the season. The Tigers extended their lead to 2-0 when Caro Cat scored on a short shot from the right side of the cage. Penn State 8nished its season at 17-3, recording 16 or more wins for the 17th time under Morett-Curtiss. In addition, the Lions made their 31th NCAA tour- nament appearance, tying them for sec- ond all-time with Old Dominion. The Nittany Lions' 78 goals on the season tied for 8:h all-time. WOMEN'S SOCCER Penn State advances with win over Bucknell Five Nittany Lions scored en route to a 6-0 victory over Bucknell in the 8rst round of the NCAA tournament Nov. 11 at Je9rey Field. Penn State (12-4-4) got goals from Nickolette Driesse and Char- lotte Williams to take a 2-0 lead before hal:ime. The Bison were never able to catch up. "This is the perfect way to end the home season on Je9rey Field, in front of another great crowd, and with Nicko- lette Driesse having the game-winner in her 8nal home game in her senior year," coach Erica Dambach said. "We also had a shutout, so I think that we were 8ring on all cylinders tonight." Penn State, the defending national champion, advanced to face third- seeded Virginia on Nov. 18 at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Ohio State tops PSU in five-set match Despite a spectacular o9ensive per- formance from junior middle blocker Haleigh Washington, 10th-ranked Penn State fell to Ohio State in a 8ve-set heartbreaker Nov. 12 at St. John Arena. Washington paced the o9ense with a team-best 19 kills on a .621 attacking clip, while posting a match-best four blocks. She was joined in double-8gure scoring by Simone Lee and Heidi The- len, who posted 19 and 11 kills, respec- tively. Lee tacked on four digs, while Thelen posted a pair of blocks. Junior outside hitter Ali Frantti had nine kills and nine digs in the setback. With her 8:h kill of the match, she sur- passed 900 kills for her career. The loss dropped Penn State to 19-8 overall and 11-5 in the Big Ten.
