Early Signs Call For Signing Early MURPHY'S LAW DAN MURPHY Irish head coach Brian Kelly is in favor of an early signing period for football. W behind him as soon as possible. On July 3, Martini pledged to play college football at Notre Dame with no fanfare whatsoever and then planned to return to his regularly scheduled high school life. For better or worse, football recruits are ning his junior year this fall, that won't be the case. He has 582 days to mull over his decision before he can make it official on the first Wednesday of February in 2014. That's 582 days of other coaching staffs trying to help his mulling process, and 582 days of making up their minds about where to at- tend school earlier than ever before. Thir- teen of the top 20 high school seniors in the country according to 247Sports have al- ready sifted through dozens of options and know where they'll be a year from now. So have 71 of the top 100 players on 247Sports' rankings. Notre Dame had 17 players ver- bally committed in the upcoming recruiting class as of July 24, which is four more than a year ago at that time and five more than the year before that. AUGUST 2012 9
