The large contingent of Lion fans
among the throng of 102,247 expected the
Penn State offense to break it open in the
third quarter. Instead, Collins threw his
only interception of the afternoon. Ore-
gon linebacker Reggie Jordan ran it back
38 yards to the PSU 17, and the Ducks tied
the score two plays later with five minutes
left in the period. But freshman tailback
Ambrose Fletcher made what may have
been the play of the game by returning
the kickoff 72 yards to the Oregon 21.
Carter ran for 4, then for 17 and the
touchdown, and Brett Conway's PAT put
the Lions back into the lead. Moments
later, Penzenik made the defensive play of
the game. He intercepted his second pass
at the Penn State 43 and didn't stop run-
ning until he was at the Oregon 13. Three
plays later, Carter scored from the 3 and
the Lions were on their way to the Rose
Bowl victory.
With nine minutes left in the fourth
quarter, Conway kicked a 43-yard field
goal, and a few minutes later fullback Jon
Witman scored from the 9 after Oregon
gambled and lost on a fourth down at its
own 13-yard line. "Nittany Lions Finally
Put Away Oregon, 38-20, to Complete 12-
0 Season," said a subhead in the Los An-
INTO THE OPEN Carter's 83-yard
touchdown run on Penn State's
first offensive play was the
game's most memorable mo-
ment, but it didn't signal the start
of a Nittany Lion rout. Oregon
needed only four plays to tie the
score, and the Ducks kept the
game close until the fourth quar-
ter. BWI file photo
