4 THE WOLVERINE JANUARY 2017 WOLVERINES WERE ROBBED Dear The Wolverine: I have seen or attended hundreds of Michigan games in my lifetime (my dad first took me to the Michigan vs. Army game in 1949). I have never seen a game where the officials were so in- timidated into inaction as the Nov. 26 game in Columbus. In the overtime alone there was a pass interference and a holding that should have been called on Ohio. And on what should have been the last play, one official placed the ball down and then the referee picked it up and moved it one foot forward and then re- viewed the play on his own placement. It was obvious what he wanted the ruling to be; probably to save his own life from the bloodthirsty Ohio fans. If he had called it short of a first down (which it was) I don't think even a po- lice escort could have gotten him off the field uninjured. Thank you Jim Harbaugh for stating the obvious, when he said he was "bit- terly disappointed" with the officials. Michigan gets seven penalties for 59 yards and Ohio gets two penalties for six yards! So what if he gets fined or whatever — he was right! Does the Big Ten grade these crews? One thing most Big Ten fans do agree on is the animalistic behavior of the Ohio fans before, during and after games. Michigan fans are a cut above that sort of behavior and should be proud of it. Richard Chamberlin Hickory Corners, Mich. It takes great courage to do what's right in the face of overwhelming opposition, Richard. The Big Ten officials in this in- stance demonstrated none. Harbaugh sim- ply called it the way he saw it, which is probably more than they did. Officiating does get examined, behind the scenes. One can only hope that the embar- rassment the Big Ten suffered nationally over this exerts an additional effect in this case and cuts through the organization's typical arms-folded, we're-right stance. PROUD OF EFFORT AT OSU Dear The Wolverine: I have a comment and then a ques- tion. I realize moral victories stink, but I can't tell you how proud I am of the Maize and Blue lads who played in the Ohio State game. His postgame comments drew a reprimand from the Big Ten and a $10,000 fine for U-M. PHOTO BY PER KJELDSEN
