Southern Cal rallies past Penn State for Rose Bowl crown
All season long, Penn State lived by the big play.
But on Monday night, a@er a series of spectacular
touchdowns in the Rose Bowl, that go-for-broke
instinct turned out to be the Nittany Lions' undo-
ing.
With the score tied in the final minute and Penn
State facing third-and-long, Trace McSorley
hurled a deep pass down the sideline intended for
Chris Godwin. It was the kind of no-guts-no-
glory moment that had been the Lions' hallmark
during the regular season. But the pass was inter-
cepted by Leon McQuay III, and his return set up a
46-yard field goal by Matt Boermeester, giving
Southern California a 52-49 victory in the highest-
scoring Rose Bowl ever.
