Terrapins center Brionna Jones poured in 42 points against the visiting Lady Lions on Jan. 11, and as coach Brenda Frese acknowledged, her team needed all of them. Said Frese, "Penn State was the more aggressive team for 40 minutes." Maybe so, but it wasn't the victorious team, as the Terps withstood a late come- back attempt and handed Penn State an 89-83 loss. "I thought we had a pretty good plan," Lady Lions assistant coach Tamika Williams-Jeter said. "Our kids executed it. We got punched and we punched back. It was physical. It was a good overall Big Ten game." The Lady Lions fared better than they did in road losses to Rutgers and Purdue, both of which were by double digits. Heading into its Jan. 16 game against Wisconsin, Penn State was 11-6 overall and 1-4 in Big Ten play, with its only con- ference victory coming against Iowa, 71- 58, on Jan. 3 at the Bryce Jordan Center. Through 17 games, the Lady Lions were being led by sophomore Teniya Page, who was second in the Big Ten with an average of 19.2 points per game. Meanwhile, fel- low guard Amari Carter was sporting the league's best assist-to-turnover ratio, but the frontcourt wasn't enjoying the same success, as Penn State was 13th in the conference in defensive rebounds (24.2 per game) and eighth in rebounding margin (+3.4 per game). Following the loss to Maryland, Williams-Jeter suggested that the Lady Lions could take a lesson from Jones, whom she described as "the strongest, meanest little thing I've ever seen in my life." The senior finished with 14 re- bounds to lead all players that night. "We got beat on the post, we got knocked around, and I'm happy," Williams-Jeter said, "because now I can show them some film and hopefully get them a little bit better." –MATT HERB Third-ranked Maryland withstands Lady Lions' rally
