T H E M A I N E V E N T MEN'S ICE HOCKEY PENN STATE vs. PRINCETON 7 P . M . | J A N . 2 8 | P H I L A D E L P H I A Penn State's 8nal nonconference game of the season will take place at the Wells Fargo Center, site of the Philadelphia College Hockey Faceo:. The Nittany Lions are 3-1-0 all-time on the Flyers' home ice, having faced Vermont in all four of those previous visits. But Princeton could pose a challenge. While the Tigers' 7-11-2 record is mediocre, they have swept two series against top-10 teams this season, sti9ing then- No. 10 Bemidji, 4-1 and 3-1, in November and stopping then-No. 7 Quinnipiac, 5-3 and 4-1, in early December. Princeton is led by a pair of sophomore forwards, Max Veronneau and Ryan Ku:ner, who had combined for 17 goals and 26 assists through the team's 8rst 20 games. On the opposite end of the ice, senior goalie Colton Phin- ney had made 19 starts and compiled a 3.64 goals against average and .892 save per- centage. Princeton is the closest Division I team to Philadelphia, but with Penn State o: to the best start in the program's history – the Nittany Lions were 16-2-1 and ranked fourth in the country as of this writing – the 19,500-seat arena will likely be awash in blue and white. For the many Penn State alumni who reside in southeastern Pennsylvania and may be reluctant to embark on a midwinter trip to Centre County, this will be a great opportunity to see PSU's fast-rising program in action. – M.H. SCORECARD ALL SPORTS Penn State seventh in Directors' Cup race Penn State is off to another strong start in the Learfield Directors' Cup, as the Nittany Lions posted their 10th consecutive top-10 fall finish. In the final fall Directors' Cup standings, Penn State was ranked No. 7 with 293 points, moving up three spots from the fall 2015 rankings. The Nittany Lions have finished in the top 10 in the final fall standings in 20 of the 24 years the Directors' Cup has ex- isted. Penn State and Stanford are the only schools nationwide to place in the top 10 in the final fall Directors' Cup standings in each of the past 10 years. During the fall semester, Penn State won Big Ten championships in foot- ball and women's soccer, while the field hockey team captured the league tournament title. The field hockey, women's cross country, women's soccer and women's volleyball teams all competed in their respective NCAA championships, while the football team played in the Rose Bowl. Four fall teams were ranked in their respective top 15s (final regular- season ranking): women's cross country (eighth), field hockey (fifth), football (seventh) and women's vol- leyball (13th). Stanford leads the Directors' Cup with 504.5 points and is followed by UCLA (348), North Carolina (345), Wisconsin (324), BYU (312.5), Michi- gan (297.5), Penn State (293), USC (290), Washington (281.5) and Col- orado (268.5). The Big Ten's three teams in the top 10 are second-most among all con- ferences. The Nittany Lions are among only nine programs nationwide to have finished in the top 25 in all 23 Learfield Directors' Cup final stand- ings. ■ FOOTBALL 11-3, 8-1 SEPTEMBER 3 W KENT STATE............................................... 33-13 10 L at Pitt........................................................ 42-39 17 W TEMPLE..................................................... 34-27 24 L at Michigan................................................ 49-10 OCTOBER 1 W MINNESOTA........................................ 29-26 (OT) 8 W MARYLAND................................................ 38-14 22 W OHIO STATE................................................24-21 29 W at Purdue...................................................62-24 NOVEMBER 5 W IOWA......................................................... 41-14 12 W at Indiana.................................................. 45-31 19 W at Rutgers....................................................39-0 26 W MICHIGAN STATE........................................ 45-12 DECEMBER 3 Big Ten Championship Game at Indianapolis W Wisconsin.................................................. 38-31 JANUARY 2 Rose Bowl at Pasadena, Calif.
