FRANCO FROM PAGE 41 Mart convenience store chain, which was then headquartered in the town. Later he began consulting with a for- mer professor, Dr. Peter Bordi, an ex- pert on food innovation. "We all get caught up in our own lives, and there's never been a slow moment for me in 40 years," Harris said. "I've had fantastic success in the last 40 years, and it's hard to believe at this stage in my life I am busier than ever. Part of my being busy is I travel a lot, and that makes it hard to stay in touch. And we know how busy Joe's been. So, I would go up there and call to say 'Hi' and sometimes get to see him. I'd call and he'd say, 'You can't come over now because I have a re- cruit,' and I'd chuckle." Harris admits he "really didn't have the time" to spend on Paterno's doorstep and elsewhere in the town and on campus in those weeks he spent defending Paterno. It also cost him a position as spokesman for a Pittsburgh area casino, and it inten- sified his political battles with Pitts- burgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, who defeated Harris's son, Dok, and a third candidate in the 2009 general election. But Harris strongly believes somebody needed to speak out then and to continue to do so now. "Everyone connects Joe to this thing in a big, big way, and that is so mis- leading," he said. "Why do they focus so much on Joe? This book ["Game Over"] came out with Joe's picture on the front cover. They are using this man, and it's very upsetting. These people put all this focus on Joe and what he should have done, but they re- ally don't say enough about [Gov.] Cor- bett and about what he should have done at the time [he was attorney gen- eral]. They talk nothing about what the two investigations [in 1998 and 2001] should have done or what more The Second Mile [organization] should have done. It's all on Joe. It's like Joe caused what happened in the next 10 years, the next 10 years after 2001 was all Joe's fault." Harris resents criticism that while de- fending Joe he doesn't say enough about the victims of Sandusky. "Peo- ple use that to deflect our attention," he said. "People think they care about kids more than you and me. It's not like we have to go out there and grandstand. That's not the issue. There are a lot of people dealing with the sexual child abuse issue, and I thank them for doing that. But my fo- cus is on the damage that has been done to Penn State and to Penn State football and Joe Paterno. "I want to know what caused this [concentration] on Joe. What caused the board of trustees to make that de- cision to fire Joe? What caused Linda Kelly or Corbett or Noonan to do what they did? A lot of what they did has caused this aftermath [with the vil- ification of] Joe, and we need to dig un- til we find the cause. Why did the board of trustees do that? Who was be- hind that, and who led that charge and why? We're not going to stop until we find out. "I would also like the governor to give up his appointees to the board, and the new structure should be that those ap- pointees should be voted on by the Penn State alumni. Let's have the fu- ture of Penn State be put in Penn Staters' hands." CORNER FROM PAGE 9 tions is more critical than it is at cornerback. Other than Lucas, who signed this past February, Penn State has not recruited any pure safeties in its past three recruiting classes. If Thomas is able to win the start- ing right cornerback job, Penn State will be able to move Amos to free safety. It's also possible that Gold- en, at 6-1, 185 pounds, will be able to play the free safety position. That would help alleviate depth concerns at safety. In addition, it's hoped that red- shirt sophomore Ryan Keiser will be ready in October as he works his way back from a knee injury. Given the depth at situation at those positions, it's important that the Nittany Lions sign two safeties next February. The coaching staff has already gotten a verbal commit- ment from one free safety prospect – Robinson – but it's likely that the staff will try to sign one more, and maybe two.
