McGloin said his plan for the sum- mer is to take part in seven-on-seven drills and to "throw as many balls as I can." He conceded that there's still a lot of work ahead as Penn State looks to revamp an offense that finished eighth or lower in the Big Ten in every major offensive statistical category last fall, including a 12th-place perform- ance in pass efficiency. But knowing already that he's going to be the starting quarterback should help. "It definitely is great to get it off my mind and just not have to worry about it anymore," he said. "It definite- ly gives me more time to focus on me- chanics, film work, organizing some seven-on-sevens with the guys, going over plays and going over formations. "But at the same time, I definitely do understand that as the starter, I have to work harder than ever to keep that spot." That much is certainly true. Jones' stock appears to be on the rise, and he will become a more credible chal- lenger should the offense struggle during Penn State's nonconference season. So the competition isn't real- ly over. This may be a new era, but some things never change. WR Smith leaves football team Fourth-year senior receiver Devon Smith has left the Penn State football team for personal reasons, coach Bill O'Brien announced June 22. Smith ran into trouble in March when marijuana residue was discov- ered in his on-campus apartment. He sat out most of spring practice after suf- fering a foot injury. Smith's status with the team ap- peared to be an ongoing question mark, though O'Brien had offered his support on multiple occasions throughout the Coaches Caravan in May. According to sources close to the team, members of the squad are acutely aware of O'Brien's attitude to- ward disciplinary action. "No messing around," a source said. A three-year starter, Smith finishes his career at Penn State with 56 recep- tions for 795 yards and three touch- downs. – NATE BAUER W W W . B L U E W H I T E O N L I N E .
