N E W C O M E R S Head coach Cael Sanderson has said he would prefer that all the members of the freshman class red- shirt their first year, but if Gulibon proves worthy, he'll start. If it were up to Gulibon, he'd start right away. "If [the coaches] want to redshirt me, they can redshirt me," he said. "But I'm ready to come up there and compete, to start." Gulibon doesn't like sitting out, having to watch from the sideline. He was forced to miss about five weeks of his senior season due to a grade-one tear of the medial collateral ligament in his knee. He quickly realized he'd rather be on the mat. "Watching was- n't too fun for me," he said. So he'll do what he can to secure a starting spot as a true freshman. If he's able find his way into the lineup, he would be the seventh Nittany Lion starter who was ranked as a top-10 overall recruit coming out of high school. (Megaluids, Andrew Alton, Dylan Alton, David Taylor, Ed Ruth O F I N F L U E N C E and Morgan McIntosh are the others.) Ranked the third-best prospect in the country and at the top of his weight class by Intermat.com, Gulibon re- ceived 12 Division I scholarship offers, including offers from other Big Ten schools, such as Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan and Iowa. But the in-state Nittany Lions had an inherent advantage. "It was pretty sweet [to be heavily re- cruited]," Gulibon said, "but I've always wanted to go to Penn State, so I did- n't really talk to [the other schools]." He'll arrive at Penn State in late June to begin summer classes and embark on the next phase of his wrestling ca- reer. He's already accomplished about as much as a high school wrestler can in one career, so he'll look to build on that in his blue and white singlet. And he already has a model for that success. Before Gulibon, the last four- time Pennsylvania state champ was Je- remy Hunter, who capped his high school career with his fourth title in ›› ADDITIONAL RECRUITS ROUND OUT NITTANY LIONS' CLASS In addition to Jimmy Lawson and Jimmy Gulibon, PSU is welcoming three other recruits this coming sea- son.
