the wife of former Penn State place- kicker Travis Forney. The abun- dance of candidates may have worked in favor of the handful of candidates whose names were well known to alumni, but it was clear on message boards and on newspa- per opinion pages and even at the Alumni Association's Meet the Candidates gathering before the Blue-White Game that the Paterno issue had galvanized Penn Staters. Lubrano said he had talked to Peetz and hopes to have further dis- cussions aimed at getting the apolo- gy that he said the Paterno family is due. "I truly believe that [she] is inter- ested in healing this community," he told WITF. "In fact, I've had that conversation with her. She'd like nothing more than that. But I think she's also very astute when she acknowledges that they've had mis- steps and the last thing they want to do is have another one. So I think we just have to continue to have those conversations and hope that the calmer heads will prevail and we can get some people to step back and say, 'We were rash, we rushed to judgment and we all have the best interests of the university at heart and we need to do this in order to move forward.' " ICE HOCKEY Penn State unveils varsity schedule Highlighted by four matchups against future Big Ten opponents Michigan State and Wisconsin and a home weekend series against Air Force, Penn State's first NCAA Division I schedule has been announced by head coach Guy Gadowsky. In 2012-13, the Nittany Lions will compete as an independent and play 23 games against NCAA Division I opponents from all five conferences – Atlantic Hockey, CCHA, ECAC Hockey, Hockey East and WCHA – and fellow independ- ent Alabama Huntsville. Penn State will also face off against three NCAA Division III foes, while playing eight exhibition contests. In all, the Lions will host 16 games at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. Ticket packages for all home games will go on sale June 12. "This brings us one step closer to dropping the puck on Penn State's first NCAA Division I season," Gadowsky said. "We've been able to schedule some marquee matchups both home and on the road that will help provide a measuring stick for the program moving forward." The Nittany Lions will also play at least six games against NCAA tour- nament teams from a year ago. The Air Force Academy, which captured the 2012 Atlantic Hockey regular- season and tournament crowns en route to its second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, highlights the home slate and will visit University Park for a two-game series Nov. 9-10. Two weekends later, Penn State will travel to Schenectady, N.Y., for a pair of matchups against 2012 Frozen Four participant and ECAC Hockey champion Union Nov. 23- 24. On Jan. 25-26, the Nittany Lions will make the trip to Michigan State, which appeared in the 2012 NCAA tournament, for a weekend series against the Spartans. Penn State, which last played a varsity game on March 3, 1947, against Georgetown, will open its first-ever NCAA Division I season Oct. 12 when it hosts American International. For the complete schedule, please see page 39. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PSU to face Miami for first time Penn State will visit Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season runner- up Miami in the Sixth Annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Nov. 29. It will be the first-ever meeting between the teams. The Lady Lions are 2-3 in Big Ten/ACC Challenge games, includ- ing a victory over Duke in the inau- gural challenge and a record-setting 103-84 win over nationally ranked North Carolina last year. [There are] a lot of returning underclassmen who saw sig- nificant playing time in 2011 and who, one would hope, learned a lot from the experience. And that doesn't take into account the potential contributions of incoming fresh- men 6-foot-2 [outside hitter/setter] Megan Courtney, 6- foot-2 [outside/middle hitter] Paulina Prieto Cerame (who is already enrolled), and 5-foot-6 [libero] Kendall Pierce, all of whom bring considerable talent to Happy Valley. DIGNITTANYVOLLEYBALL.COM OPINIONS O'Brien will be making major changes to PSU's offense and defense, but he's not willing to sacrifice a full season or two in order to do so just so he can say he did it all his way. The right way is doing whatever it takes to win with your personnel, not egotistically thinking your system alone is always good enough. CORY GIGER ALTOONA MIRROR The Lions' biggest problem heading into August might be depth at defensive back. Who can PSU count on, especially when the other team spreads the field? Stephon Morris has emerged as the top corner but he needs a running mate. The answer might be [Adrian] Amos. I think his play, and his health, will be one of the keys to the season. BOB FLOUNDERS THE (HARRISBURG) PATRIOT-NEWS Matt McGloin didn't put on an awesome performance in the Blue-White Game, but nobody else showed they are current- ly better than him. Jones completed less than half of his passes. Bolden threw three interceptions. It's fair to assume that, if O'Brien is ready to name a starter, it will be McGloin. Jones has never played. Despite repeated chances, Bolden never exceeded McGloin's standard, and that was the case again in the Blue-White Game. But it's one thing to make an early decision and another to make the best decision. The benefits to making an early decision are obvious. But the best decision comes with time and certainty. DONNIE COLLINS THE SCRANTON TIMES TRIBUNE The caravan's purpose was to get fans to support O'Brien with the hope it will unify the Penn State faithful. Right now, O'Brien has their support. Winning will only strength- en that. Losing will certainly hurt, but the difference between other programs and Penn State is Penn State prides itself on winning "the right way." If O'Brien can do that, he'll win over all Penn State fans, and in turn, they'll embrace his brash and up-front approach to coaching. DUANE RANKIN ERIE TIMES-NEWS The most devastating loss for me, college or pro, was the loss to Penn State. I just went back into the locker room and was completely devastated. That '86 Miami team was the best I ever had. JIMMY JOHNSON, FORMER MIAMI COACH, REFLECTING ON THE HURRICANES' 14-10 LOSS TO PSU IN THE 1987 FIESTA BOWL J U N E 2 8 , 2 0 1 2 7
