MICKEY FROM PAGE 35 cushions and looked like thrones. None of us had ever seen a locker room like this before, and we all made sure we sat in the thrones for a few minutes. Royalty at last. Mickey was the most expressive, and he was reflecting on the irony of all of us inside what was then a vir- tually all-white, Protestant enclave. "I'm just a poor Jewish kid from western Pennsylvania," Mickey said. "No one in my family would ever be allowed near a place like this, let alone play golf here." He was refer- ring to the ethnic and religious prej- udice of the era that barred a lot of us from many clubs. Years later, we were still talking about visiting that swank locker room in Biscayne Bay. I left Pittsburgh in the winter of 1969, and I don't remember seeing Mickey much over the next 25 years except for a couple of times at bowl games. But a few months after I had moved to the State College area in 1996, I ran into him at the Arts Festival. It was almost like I had never left – good old friendly and amiable Mickey. He had heard about the Penn State football book I was writing and told me that he, too, was writing a book. He asked me for some tips on finding a publisher. Until two years ago when his health deteriorated, I would see Mickey at men's basketball games, sitting a few rows behind me in section 106 of the Bryce Jordan Center. He would always wave and say hello. We weren't close friends by any means, but Mickey and I considered each other friends just the same. No one represented what Penn State stands for better than Mickey Bergstein. RIP Mickey. You are Penn State! SCHWAN FROM PAGE 31 Schwan had three tackles and a sack in a 14-7 victory over North Penn, giving Central Dauphin its first state football title. It was truly a storybook ending. Those who know him best say he deserved one. "He knows football, has great foot- ball smarts," Rosler said. "He's a great kid off the field as well, keeps his nose clean and does what's expected of him at school. But man, when he gets on the field, he can become a bit of a prick at times, and that demeanor is something you don't get too often. Those are the ingredients of a great football play- er." CORNER FROM PAGE 9 tor Tom Bradley told BWI numer- ous times over the past two sea- sons that Thomas was the team's best cover cornerback. Blue-chip cover corners are always valuable commodities, and they're likely to be even more important in the future because it appears the Nittany Lions' new defensive coordi- nator, Ted Roof, would like to play some man-to-man press coverages and vary his pass-coverage pack- ages. It's not going to be easy. With new offensive and defensive schemes in the works, it's not realistic to expect Penn State to field a well- oiled machine in the Blue-White Game on April 21. But we might get an indication of how successfully O'Brien and his staff have been able to imple- ment what they want to do in the fall.
