open scholarships for the 2012-13 season. Saying he refuses to rush and make rash decisions just to fill open- ings, Chambers could be facing anoth- er daunting year without "his guys." From the inside, however, the expec- tations are much, much higher. Frazier, an All-Big Ten point guard this year, is set to return alongside guard Jermaine Marshall, small for- ward Ross Travis and big men Sasa Borovnjak and Jon Graham. The Nit- tany Lions have 70 percent of their scoring, 60 percent of their rebound- ing and 77 percent of their assists coming back. Throw in D.J. Newbill, a Southern Mississippi transfer who was required to sit out this past season due to NCAA rules, and it's not hard to see why Chambers is excited about the future. More than excited, actually. When he was asked about adding Newbill to the mix, Chambers gushed, "I can't wait. I think we're going to have the best backcourt in the country." "In the country?" a reporter asked, stunned. "You heard me," he said. "In the country." A star at Strawberry Mansion High School in Philadelphia, Newbill was named the state Class AA Player of the Year, averaging more than 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists per game his senior season. As a freshman at Southern Miss, he started all 32 games and averaged 9.2 points per game while shooting 53.5 percent. Chambers said Newbill has "tough- ness, a winner's mentality. He's an ex- tremely hard worker. He loves to play. Always in here shooting or doing something. He's really becoming a leader and is going to help Tim out with his leadership role. "He's going to bring a lot. And he's got a great personality. He's got a great smile, a great personality. You're go- ing to love dealing with D.J., and you're going to love him on the floor because he's going to give you maximum effort every time." Newbill should help the Nittany Li- ons improve their lackluster shooting numbers. They ranked 11th in the Big Ten in scoring this season, averaging only 61.8 points per game. As a team, they shot a conference-worst 39.3 percent from the floor. The Nittany Lions have now had nearly a year under Chambers and his attitude-driven formula for success. As he begins preparing for his second sea- son, he said he is looking forward to seeing how his players progress. "They want to win," he said. "They want to be successful. I felt that in Feb- ruary and March [the culture] was starting to change. So, yeah, when September rolls around, they're going to be ready and they're going to be hap- py." Lewis, Glover opt to transfer from PSU Guards Trey Lewis and Matt Glover are getting set to leave Penn State. Lewis, a native of Garfield Heights, Ohio, who signed with the Nittany Li- ons before the departure of coach Ed DeChellis last spring, declined to elaborate on the reasons for his deci- sion. He said he does not yet know where he will enroll. "I'm undecided but I'm looking for a better fit," he said. "I'm actually in high spirits. I'm feeling really good about the future." Lewis sat out part of his freshman season with a lower back injury. He played in 20 games and started six, av- eraging 5.6 points. Glover, a native of Orange, Calif., is leaving to be closer to home. He con- nected on only 23.5 percent of his shots from the floor, but he embodied the scrappy attitude that Patrick Chambers looked to instill in his first season as coach. Glover averaged 23.5 minutes, 4.2 rebounds and 43 assists this past season. Chambers said the decisions "real- ly just come down to what's best for them and for us. … I care about these kids. I want what's best for them, I want what's best for us, and if the best decision at the end of the day is to in- vestigate other opportunities, that's OK, too. There's nothing wrong with a fresh start." Lewis and Glover are the second and third players to transfer from Penn State this season. In January, fresh- man forward Peter Alexis revealed that he was planning to leave. He is set to enroll at Philadelphia University, Chambers' alma mater. – N.B. W W W .
