FOOTBALL Paterno licensing reverts to family Penn State-licensed Joe Paterno merchandise has disappeared from the shelves of bookstores, down- town markets and anywhere else it was being sold. The university announced Nov. 28 that "the use of Mr. Paterno's name, likeness, and/or image will no longer be approved through the uni- versity, and Penn State will no longer approve any designs featur- I C E H O C K E Y ing Mr. Paterno's name, likeness, and/or image." Merchants were given 60 days to sell remaining products before removing them from the shelves. With that 60-day period now expired, the rights to license Paterno-related items now belong to JVP Properties, a company run by Paterno's daughter Mary Kay Hort. Those rights include the use of "Paterno," "Joe Paterno," "JoePa," or even the rolled-up pant legs and thick eyeglasses that were emblem- atic of the Nittany Lions' longtime football coach. However, some Paterno-related memorabilia does not fall under the new licensing regulations, such as the commonly seen shirt that reads "Joe Knows Football." The facility is expected to be complete by September 2013. Tim Owen Work under way on Pegula Ice Arena The future home of Penn State ice hockey has people buzzing – not only in Pennsylvania, but as far away as Canada. "Everybody," said Guy Gadowsky, the Nittany Lions' first-year men's hockey coach. "Parents, coaches, people on the street, you go to Toronto and they see Penn State and they're talking about it." What they're talking about is the 6 M A R C H 2 3 , 2 0 1 2 Pegula Ice Arena, a 200,000- square-foot facility that is expected to open September 2013. It's a state-of-the-art arena designed to house up to 6,000 fans of the men's and women's ice hockey programs, which will make the transition to Division I for the 2012-13 season. "Everywhere we go recruiting, peo- ple are talking about it," Gadowsky said. "They ask how the arena is and they said they saw plans and how it looks great. Yeah, people are very excited about it, all throughout hockey. "It's funny. It's a bigger deal almost outside of State College. It's a bigger deal in the hockey world right now." Though construction crews are barely a month into development and ground clearing is continuing, Gadowsky said the arena is already paying dividends on the recruiting trail. And if there ever was a region to begin searching for hockey recruits, it is Canada. "When [we] go on the road recruit- ing and make phone calls," Gadowsky said, "everybody in col- lege hockey is excited about it and talking about it." – TIM OWEN State' or 'Joe Paterno,' it is still legal," Tracy Bell, store coordinator for The Family Clothesline in State College, told the Centre Daily Times. "We print the 'Joe Knows Football' shirt in-house." MEN'S BASKETBALL Cline-Heard arrested in Fla. Gyasi Cline-Heard, one of the key players in Penn State's run to the Sweet 16 in 2001, was arrested on drug and gun charges Feb. 10 and is now incarcerated at the Pinellas (Fla.) County Jail. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Cline-Heard, 32, was described by authorities as the leader of a drug and gun ring based in Pasco and Pinellas, Fla. Four dozen guns were found in a series of raids that included his house and his tattoo shop, Legacy Tattoo. Most were assault rifles and machine guns, and police also found rounds of armor-piercing ammunition. Lt. Chuck Balderstone of the Pasco County Sheriff's Office told reporters the weapons cache resembled "something you would see in a spy movie." Undercover agents also reportedly bought more than 617 grams of cocaine and a .380-caliber hand- gun from Cline-Heard over the course of 11 transactions since November. The son of former NBA player and coach Gar Heard, Cline-Heard played at Penn State from 1998 to 2001. He went on to play profes- sionally overseas, most recently in South Korea during the 2010 sea- son. W W W . B L U E W H I T E O N L I N E . C O M
