108 THE WOLVERINE MARCH 2017   OLYMPIC SPORTS of the season … Prior to the meet, the Wolverines honored their seven departing seniors — Julia Fiks Salem, Maddy Frost, Madison Horton, Celia Keany, Keegan McCaffrey, Allie Murphy and Claudia Goswell — in an on-deck ceremony … Sopho- more Yirong Bi had an outstanding day, setting a new Can- ham Natatorium record in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:35.49) … Sophomore Siobhan Haughey came out victorious in the 100-yard freestyle (48.39), 200-yard freestyle (1:46.76) and 200- yard individual medley (1:59.32), and was awarded with Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors as a result … Michigan, which was ranked No. 6 nationally, closed out the regular season by win- ning all 14 events in a 173-80 victory at Michigan State Feb. 4 … Bi claimed the top spot in both the 400-yard individual medley (4:16.23) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.90) en route to earning Big Ten Swimmer of the Week accolades … The Big Ten Championships will be held Feb. 15-18 at West Lafayette, Ind. MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING (5-1 OVERALL, 3-1 BIG TEN) The Wolverines defeated No. 17 Ohio State 186-114 Jan. 27, winning 11 of 16 events … With the victory, the Maize and Blue have now won their last 20 dual meets against the Buckeyes … Before the meet, U-M honored its eight-man senior class — Julian Ballestas, Colin Eaton, Jackson Goethe, Chris Klein, Jack Mangan, Luke Papendick, Cameron Stitt and Vinny Tafuto … On Feb. 4, Michigan won 13 of 14 events at Michigan State en route to a 160-90 victory in the final dual meet of the regular season … The Big Ten Champion- ships will be held Feb. 22-25 at Columbus, Ohio. MEN'S TENNIS (5-1 OVERALL) Michigan began the dual-match portion of its season with a 4-0 victory over Alabama Jan. 21 in Orlando, Fla. … The Maize and Blue notched a pair of back-to-back 6-1 victories over Princeton Feb. 2 and South Florida Feb. 5, extending their winning streak to 16 games at the Varsity Tennis Center … No. 18 Michigan picked up a 5-3 win at No. 19 Columbia Feb. 11, marking the second straight season the Wolverines have gotten off to a 5-1 start. WOMEN'S TENNIS (6-1 OVERALL) On Jan. 17, sophomore Kate Fahey was named Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week after sweeping the singles and doubles titles at the Michigan Invitational Jan. 14-16 … The Maize and Blue shut out No. 23 Mississippi State 4-0 Jan. 29, with sophomore Brienne Minor winning the final four games of her third set to clinch the victory; her heroics earned her Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades Jan. 31 … Mi- nor and Fahey were each victorious against top-10 foes in No. 13 Michigan's 4-1 upset of No. 8 Vanderbilt Feb. 11. MEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD The Wolverines placed first out of seven teams at the Notre Dame Invitational Jan. 21 in South Bend, Ind. … Sophomore Joe Ellis broke his weight throw school record two separate times, topping out at 72 feet, three inches on his way to win- ning Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honors … At the John Thomas Terrier Classic Jan. 28 in Boston, junior Connor Mora and seniors Ned Willig (who won Big Ten Athlete of the Week afterward) and Will Sheeran all recorded sub-four-minute miles … During the second day of the Akron Invitational Feb. 4, senior Steven Bastien posted 5,843 points in the heptathlon, breaking his own school record of 5,810; Bastien was then named Big Ten Athlete of the Week … Ellis broke his weight throw school record for the third time Feb. 10 at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, throwing 72-6.5. WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD Junior Erin Finn was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week after placing third in the mile at Michigan's Simmons- Harvey Invitational Jan. 14 … The Wolverines racked up 113 points and finished first out of seven teams at the Notre Dame Invitational Jan. 21 in South Bend, Ind. … Finn claimed the 3,000-meter title, running a nation-leading 9:07.24; she was awarded with Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week once again … On Feb. 4, junior Gina Sereno recorded a career-best 4:36.68 mile to win the Meyo Mile at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational … On Feb. 10 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, Finn ran 15:34.36 over 5,000 meters — a facility record and the top time in that event nationally at that point. WATER POLO (8-5 OVERALL) No. 6 Michigan dropped its 2017 opener 11-3 at No. 2 USC Jan. 20, but then picked up two big wins over No. 25 CSU Ba- kersfield and No. 9 UC Santa Barbara Jan. 21 … After finish- ing with 47 saves and just 33 goals allowed during the Maize and Blue's first five games, freshman goalkeeper Heidi Ritner was named CWPA Defensive Player of the Week and CWPA Rookie of the Week … Senior captain Allison Skaggs was named CWPA Player of the Week after compiling nine goals and five field blocks at the Stanford Invitational Feb. 4-5. WRESTLING (8-6 OVERALL, 4-5 BIG TEN) The No. 13 Maize and Blue picked up a 19-13 home win over No. 11 Rutgers Jan. 27, with 197-pound redshirt fresh- man Jackson Striggow sealing the dual win with a 5-1 deci- sion over the Scarlet Knights' Matthew Correnti … Michigan defeated No. 10 Lehigh 24-13 in its regular-season home finale Jan. 29 … Before the contest, the Wolverines honored fifth-year seniors Cory Lester and Conor Youtsey, along with seniors Ernest Battaglia, Aaron Calderon, Payne Hayden and Brian Murphy … The duo of 165-pound redshirt freshman Logan Massa and 174-pound redshirt freshman Myles Amine earned back-to-back technical falls in a 24-15 victory at Mich- igan State Feb. 5 … Intermat (Feb. 7 listings) ranked Massa No. 2 in the nation, Murphy No. 9 and Amine No. 8, while redshirt freshman Steven Micic was No. 7 at 133 pounds.
