MARCH 2017 ■ 89 Jerricho first got here, you wouldn't hear him say five words in a week. To see the person he has become, the outstanding man he has become, that is very rewarding to me." Pate retired following the 2006 season, but still lives in Raleigh and remains close to the football program. He spends his time shuttling between Raleigh, his beach house at Carolina Beach and his three grandchil- dren. Pate's oldest and youngest daugh- ters, Katherine Bibb and Jackie Wiggs, graduated from NC State and now live in Charlotte and Richmond, respectively. His middle daughter Darrow Bertolina gradu- ated from Kansas and now lives in Raleigh. Pate still enjoys turkey hunting, work- ing out daily at a local gym and following Wolfpack athletics. "There are so many things that you miss out on as a college football coach, with all the time you spend at practice and recruit- ing, working and traveling," Pate said. "I've enjoyed retirement so much because Leslie and I get to do so many of the things we didn't do when I was coaching. We spend as much time as we can with the grand- children. "What is also rewarding is just being able to sit back and watch the people that some of those young players became. It makes all that time I spent as a coach worth it." ■ Tim Peeler is a regular contributor to The Wolfpacker. You may contact him at tmpeeler@ncsu.edu. Management Professionals, Inc.
