APRIL 2017 THE WOLVERINE 59   OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE BASEBALL (12-3) Michigan received 28 votes in the March 6 USA Today coaches' poll, but did not crack the top 25 … The Wolver- ines completed its West Coast spring break trip March 5 with a 7-1 record … U-M capped its trip with wins over USC and San Diego in Los Angeles … Against USC the Wolverines tied a season high with 12 strikeouts from the pitching staff, eight of which came from junior Ryan Nutof … Michigan had a good offensive trip, scoring less than four runs just twice over the eight games … Sophomore Ako Thomas led the way offensively with a team- high eight runs and a batting average of .371 … Michigan has four home games against Northern Illinois and one against Western Michigan from March 17-22 before conference play begins March 24 at Maryland. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (22-9 OVERALL, 11-5 BIG TEN) Michigan received four votes in the March 6 Associated Press top 25 poll … Freshman guard Kysre Gondrezick was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the sixth time this season Feb. 27 … Gondrezick was also named consensus second-team all-conference … Junior guard Katelynn Flaherty was named consensus first-team All-Big Ten and sophomore center Hallie Thome was named to the first team by the coaches and the second team by the media … Michigan finished the regular season 1-3 over the final four games, with the team's lone win com- ing at home against Nebraska Feb. 23, while losing to Michigan State at home and dropping road games at Indiana and Penn State … Michigan fell in its final game of the regular season on an end-of-game free throw by the Nit- tany Lions, 76-75 … The Wolverines entered the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 3 seed and played Michigan State in their first game, falling 74-64 … The selection for the NCAA Tournament will be held March 13 and play begins March 17 … An NCAA bid would mark the first tournament appearance for U-M since 2013. MEN'S GOLF Junior Kyle Mueller was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week March 1 fol- lowing his 14th career top-10 finish at the Pepperdine's Southwestern Invita- tional Feb. 27-28 … Mueller has led the Wolverines in four events this season and he shot a 3-under-par 213 at Pep- perdine … Michigan finished in sixth place at the Southwestern Invitational, with a total score of 879 … The Wol- verines followed up that performance with a first-place finish at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate Tournament March 4-5 in Scottsdale, Ariz. … Mich- igan finished the tournament a man short when Mueller had to sit out due to an illness, but finished with a team score of 851 … Senior Reed Hrynewich was the top individual finisher for the Wolverines, coming in second with a score of 207 … Michigan played in the Linger Longer Invitational March 19-21 in Eatonton, Ga., before heading to The Aggie Invitational April 1-2 in Bryan, Texas. WOMEN'S GOLF Michigan took second place at the Hurricane Invitational Feb. 27-March 1 in Miami after posting a final round score of 284 … Sophomore Elodie Van Dievoet and junior Emily White tied for third in the individual competition with a score of 213 … The top-five finish for Van Dievoet was the first of her career at Michigan … Junior Megan Kim also took ninth at the Hurricane Invitational … The Wolverines took fifth place at the Meadow Club Women's Intercollegiate Tournament March 6-7 in Fairfax, Ca- lif. … Van Dievoet shot a 67 in her final round of the tournament, the best round of her career, to tie for seventh place … The Wolverines will take part in the Bryan National Collegiate Tournament March 31-April 2 in Greensboro, N.C. MEN'S GYMNASTICS (6-6 OVERALL, 2-4 BIG TEN) In the March 6 College Gymnastics Association coaches' poll, Michigan was ranked No. 11 nationally … On Feb. 25, the Wolverines defeated then-No. 8 California 402.10-386.80 … Michigan took the top three spots in the pom- mel horse, still rings and vault … The Wolverines took part in the Puerto Rico Challenge March 4 … Michigan came in second place out of four teams to then-No. 6 Illinois … When U-M hosted No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 Illinois in a March 11 tri-meet, the Wolverines upset Illinois … The Big Ten Championships are slated for April 7-8 in Champaign, Ill. WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS (12-3 OVERALL, 8-1 BIG TEN) The Wolverines were No. 11 nation- ally in the March 6 College Gymnastics Association coaches' poll … In the fi- Sophomore center Hallie Thome was named first-team All-Big Ten by the league's coaches after averaging 15.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
