ICE HOCKEY (13-18-3 OVERALL, 6-12-2 BIG TEN) After struggling through most of the season, the Michigan hockey team ended the regular season 4-1 over its last five games, creating some momen- tum as it heads into the Big Ten Tour- nament, which runs March 16-18 … Over the past month, the Wolverines have notched victories over No. 15 Ohio State, No. 5 Minnesota and No. 11 Penn State … Michigan recorded its first sweep of the year in the final series of the regular season against the Nittany Lions … The Wolverines finished the regular season fifth in the Big Ten stand- ings, which means they will have a re- match against Penn State in the Big Ten first round … U-M is led in total points by freshman forward Jake Slaker, who has 21 … Head coach Red Berenson admitted lthat he originally planned to retire after last season before director of athletics Warde Manuel convinced him to stay for his 33rd year at the helm. MEN'S LACROSSE (7-1 OVERALL) In a 16-5 loss to No. 1 Notre Dame Feb. 26, senior attacker Ian King passed former Wolverine Kyle Jackson for the highest point total in program history; he had 126 career points through the first eight games of his senior season … King was named to the watch list for the Tewaaraton Award, which goes to the best men's college lacrosse player in the country; he is the first Wolver- ine to receive that honor … With a 7-5 win over Furman March 4, Michigan set a new program mark for the most victories in a season, with six … U-M picked up the first ranked win in pro- gram history by topping No. 10 Penn, 13-12, March 11 … Michigan opens Big Ten play against Maryland April 1. WOMEN'S LACROSSE (1-7 OVERALL) Michigan suffered a 15-10 loss to then-No. 17 Stanford Feb. 28, although senior Jess Angerman scored a season- high four goals … In that game, red- shirt freshman goalie Alli Kothari set a program record for saves with 15 … Michigan picked up its first victory of the season at California March 3, win- ning 14-4 … Michigan had hat tricks from Angerman and fellow seniors Kim Coughlan and Anna Schueler … The four goals allowed in the game is tied for third fewest in school history … With 13 goals over the last four games, Angerman is now first on the team this season with 14 … Coughlan tallied three goals in an 18-10 loss to Canisius March 12, giving her 101 in her career to become the first in program history to reach the triple-digit milestone … Michigan opens conference play March 18 at Ohio State. SOFTBALL (14-7-1 OVERALL) In the March 7 USA Today coaches' poll, Michigan was ranked No. 17 nationally … Senior outfielder Kelly Christner was named Big Ten Player of the Week Feb. 20 … Michigan went 3-1-1 at the Mary Nutter Classic Feb. 24-26, tying then-No. 1 Florida State 5-5 … The Wolverines finished the Judi Garman Classic with a 3-2 record, including a win over No. 20 Arizona State and a 13-5 victory over Long Beach State … The 13 runs scored by Michigan matches a season high for the team … Senior pitcher Megan Betsa struck out seven while allowing just two hits; she is 6-5 on the year after the season's first 22 contests. MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING (5-1 OVERALL, 3-1 BIG TEN) In the Feb. 23 College Swimming Co a c h e s As s o c i a t i o n o f A m e r i c a coaches' poll, the Wolverines were ranked No. 11 in the nation … The Wolverines tied for second at the Big Ten Championships Feb. 22-25, with a total score of 1,382 … Freshmen Fe- lix Aubock and Charlie Swanson, and junior Paul Powers were named first- team All-Big Ten … Seniors Chris Klein and Vinny Tafuto, freshman Jacob Mon- tague and junior Tristan Sanders were named to the second team … Aubock was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year after he claimed the conference title in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events … Powers won the final of the 50-yard freestyle, while Swanson took first in the 400-yard individual medley … The Michigan sent three divers to the NCAA Zone C Diving Champion- ships March 9-11 … The NCAA Cham- pionships will take place March 22-25 in Indianapolis, and Michigan will send eight swimmers. MEN'S TENNIS (10-3) As of March 7, Michigan was ranked No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Tennis As- sociation team rankings … Michigan posted a 6-1 road win over Cal Poly Feb. 26 before falling to No. 7 California 4-3 and No. 5 Oklahoma State 4-1 Feb. 28 and March 2, respectively … The Wol- verines returned home to beat Drake, Boise State and Dayton March 10-12 and give the squad 21 straight victories at the Varsity Tennis Center … As of March 7, the doubles team of seniors Kevin Wong and Jathan Malik were listed No. 8 in the country … Michigan's top-ranked singles player is sophomore Sophomore Olivia Karas earned her fourth Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor on March 6 after winning the all-around for the second straight week against No. 1 Oklahoma two days earlier.
