WOMEN'S TENNIS (7-3) In the March 7 Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, Michigan came in at No. 9 in the country … U-M beat Bay- lor at home 7-0 Feb. 19 before taking on USC March 3 in Los Angeles, which re- sulted in a 5-2 defeat … Michigan came back from a 3-0 deficit March 10 to post a 4-3 victory over Virginia and move to 5-0 at home this season … The doubles team of junior Alex Najarian and sopho- more Kate Fahey was rated as the No. 2 tandem in the nation, while junior Mira Ruder-Hook and sophomore Brienne Minor came in at No. 18 … At No. 20, Fa- hey was the top-ranked singles player on the Wolverines' roster … Michigan opens conference play against Michi- gan State March 18 at the Varsity Tennis Center. MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD U-M was ranked No. 21 nationally in the United States Track & Field And Cross Country Coaches Association's March 6 poll … Redshirt junior weight thrower Grant Cartwright was named Regional Field Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA … Cartwright is the first Michigan athlete to win a regional field award since 2009 … He broke the school weight throw record twice to eventually claim the Big Ten title in the event, while fellow weight thrower ju- nior Joe Ellis took second place … Mich- igan's 54-point performance earned them a share of seventh place at the Big Ten Indoor Championships Feb. 24-25 … Both senior Aaron Baumgarten and sophomore Taylor McLaughlin scored in multiple events for the Wolverines at the championships, with a third-place finish for Baumgarten in the 3,000-me- ter race … At the NCAA Indoor Cham- pionships March 10-11 in College Sta- tion, Texas, Cartwright finished second in the weight throw for U-M's highest placement in an NCAA Indoor Cham- pionships field event since 1978, while Ellis placed seventh … Fifth-year senior Steven Bastien earned second-team All-America honors in the heptathlon, while U-M tied for 22nd at nationals. WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD In the United States Track & Field And Cross Country Coaches Association's March 6 poll, Michigan was ranked No. 21 in the country … At the Big Ten In- door Championships March 24-25, the Wolverines notched a seventh-place finish with a total score of 54 points … Senior Gina Sereno took first place in the 3,000-meter event with a time of 9:07 … Freshman Jade Harrison set a school indoor record in the 400-me- ter race with a time of 52.84 seconds, good for fourth place … Senior dis- tance runner Erin Finn accounted for 16 of the Wolverines' points during the championship weekend … U-M sent two individual runners, Finn and Sereno, and its distance medley relay to the NCAA Indoor Championships March 10-11 at College Station, Texas … Finn was the runner-up at 5,000 meters (15:27.36) and became the first woman in NCAA history to twice run 15:30 or faster in the event …The DMR, which Sereno is a part of, placed fifth … Sereno placed 13th in the 3,000 me- ters and U-M tied for 14th. WATER POLO (13-8) Michigan was ranked No. 6 nation- ally in the Collegiate Water Polo As- sociation's March 8 poll … Freshman goalkeeper Heidi Ritner was named CWPA Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week March 3 … Ritner had 41 saves and five steals at the Barbara Kal- bus Invitational Feb. 24-26, while U-M notched wins over the No. 9 and No. 7 teams at the time … The Wolverines went 2-2 at the Barbara Kalbus Invita- tional with losses coming to then-No. 1 Stanford and then-No. 5 Arizona State … Michigan hosted the Wolverine In- vite March 4-5, going 3-1 including a 7-5 revenge win over Arizona State … Senior Danielle Johnson scored 14 goals over the course of the U-M-hosted event … Johnson has 27 goals on the season … The Wolverines opened con- ference play at home against Indiana March 25. WRESTLING (8-7 OVERALL, 4-5 BIG TEN) Michigan finished 15th in the fi- nal USA Today coaches' poll … U-M placed seventh at the Big Ten Cham- pionships M arch 4-5 … R edshir t freshman Logan Massa took second place in the 165-pound weight class after losing to Illinois' Isaiah Martinez, a two-time NCAA champion … The Wolverines picked up third-place fin- ishes from redshirt freshmen Myles Amine and Stevan Micic in the 174- and 133-pound weight classes, respec- tively … In total, Michigan concluded the Big Ten Championships with six wrestlers — Massa, Amine, Micic, red- shirt sophomore Zac Hall (149), senior Brian Murphy (157) and fifth-year se- nior Connor Youtsey (125) — in the top five spots of their individual weight classes … Murphy, who earned the 10th seed, had to withdraw from the NCAA Championships, but those other five wrestlers — along with 141-pound redshir t freshman Sal Profaci, who earned an at-large bid — will compete at nationals March 16-18 in St. Louis … Massa is seeded second at his weight, while Micic is fifth and Amine ninth. ❏ Redshirt freshman Logan Massa earned the No. 2 seed at the NCAA Championships after fin- ishing second in his weight class at the Big Ten Championships.
