APRIL 2017 THE WOLVERINE 9 BY JOHN BORTON M ichigan football weight training facilities have un- dergone many changes over the past decade. They're about to see the biggest boost not only in that period, but in the history of the football program. The University of Michigan Board of Regents approved on Feb. 16 construction of a football performance cen- ter and infrastructure modification in Oosterbaan Field House, at a cost of $21 million. The project will provide 32,000 square feet of perfor- mance center space within the fieldhouse, a 78,000-square- foot space that was constructed in 1980. It served as the primary indoor practice facility for Michigan football until workers completed the 104,049-square-foot Al Glick Field House in 2009. The new space — including the construction of a 5,000-square-foot mezzanine level — will be dedicated to strength and conditioning for Jim Harbaugh's football program. The construction effort will also address a number of upgrades in the 37-year-old Oosterbaan Field House. The project calls for roof replacement, new fire alarm and fire suppression systems, and a revamping of the building's lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, working with HNTB, will design the project. The facility reconstruction is scheduled to be completed in in the winter of 2018. The project will be funded through the athletic depart- ment's own resources and gifts. Harbaugh himself has been fundraising for the weight room since his arrival as head coach. He's garnered funds through hosting a golf tournament and through the sales of a photo book Inside Michigan ATHLETICS Football Performance Center Approved By Regents Oosterbaan Field House will be getting a $21-million upgrade to become the new Michigan football performance center.
