CAVALIER SPORTS Dr. Max Feinman began supporting Virginia athletics in 1971, back when Richard Nixon was President and UVA had recently gone coed. But Feinman's passion for UVA sports began during his elementary school days growing up in Lynchburg, Va. "My friends and I were walking home from school, I think I was about 10 or 11 years old," Feinman said. "There was a convertible parked in front of a neighbor's home with some college students in it. One of them was Bill Dudley. His girlfriend, who later became his wife, was an acquaintance of mine. "They had driven to Lynchburg to pick up a young woman who was dating one of the other players. Rec- ognizing Bill Dudley, we all got excited. That started my passion for Virginia athletics." Since his dad started taking him to Charlottesville to watch Hall of Famer Dudley play, Feinman said there have been numerous memorable games but there are two that stand out in his mind. The first was Virginia's first college bowl game in 1984 — a 27-24 win over the Purdue Boilermakers and quarter- back Jim Everett, a future first-round pick in the NFL Draft. "I remember the display in our hotel lobby after the game was unbelievable," Feinman said. "The Virginia pep band came march- ing into the lobby. The place was turned upside down. We couldn't believe this was the University of Virginia. "Having achieved such success, we didn't know how to handle it." Feinman's second signature memory was the freshman Ralph Sampson-led the 1980 NIT championship team. UVA defeated Minnesota 58-55 in the title game, which started a run of three NCAA Tournaments that included a trip to the 1981 Final Four. "That 1980 NIT championship was a big deal," Feinman affirmed. "The NIT was a big tournament. So some of my friends and I were there when Virginia won that game. "We couldn't believe it. Here we were in Madison Square Garden winning a legitimate basketball championship." A longtime season ticket holder for basketball and football, Feinman has also jumped on the Virginia baseball bandwagon. "I like baseball and I'm a season ticketholder," he said. "It's hard for me to pick a favorite sport; I love them all." A 1954 graduate from UVA's Medical School, Feinman took his support to a new level in the 1970s, beginning a 46-year commitment to the Virginia Athletics Foun- dation. He has been a contributor to his favorite sports and supported both the Scott Stadium expansion and the John Paul Jones Arena capital campaigns. "I recognize if it wasn't for the VAF we would not have all of these sports or be able to provide scholarships," Fein- man stated. "The staff of the VAF has done a [tremendous] job raising money. It's amazing what they're able to do." Feinman also has high praise for director of athletics Craig Littlepage. "He has to be given a lot of credit for what he's done on his watch," Feinman noted. "He has done a fantastic job when you look across the board at what the athletics department has accomplished." — Greg Waters Dr. Feinman, a 1954 graduate from UVA's Medical School, is a season ticket holder for basketball, football and baseball.
