80 ■ THE WOLFPACKER Chapel Hill that afternoon, and Christy had his heroic evening in Columbia. The Wolfpack (7-1-2, 5-0-1 ACC) car- ried Christy off the field on its shoulders, celebrating the ACC title, but that was the end of the season. Because of recruiting violations in Case's basketball program, the school was in the middle of a five-year NCAA probation that banned postseason play for all NC State sports. Duke repre- sented the ACC in the Orange Bowl, deny- ing the Wolfpack its only chance to play in a traditional New Year's Day bowl game. It didn't matter, however. On the same day that his team beat South Carolina, Ed- wards received a firm commitment from a Wilmington, N.C., multisport prospect named Roman Gabriel, who became the school's first two-time All-American and the first two-time ACC Player of the Year. From 1963-65, the Wolfpack won three consecutive ACC titles, and the year after moved into newly built Carter Stadium. The program won its first bowl game, a victory over Georgia in the Liberty Bowl in 1967, and one more ACC title under Edwards in 1968. The program was on a roll, and football was saved. ■ Tim Peeler is a regular contributor to The Wolfpacker.
