■ PACK PAST talented running backs in school history. Burden was a two-time All-ACC selection who in 1973 became the first Wolfpack running back to rush for more than 1,000 yards and was named ACC Player of the Year. Chesney went on to earn both bachelor's and master's degrees from NC State. He also earned his doctoral degree from Mich- igan State. Among his many volunteer positions included service as the president of NC State's Black Alumni Society from 1987- 89 and service on the Alumni Association's board of directors. "He was also quiet. He went about his business and he always had a smile on his face. "From what I remember, not a lot of people made a big deal about him joining the team. I think it was a smooth transition. There certainly wasn't any resistance to it from the players on the team." Shortly after earning his master's de- gree at State, Chesney went to work for North Carolina Cooperative Extension, serving as both a 4-H and natural re- sources specialist at North Carolina Cen- tral University. N.C. Agricultural Extension Service. Chesney left NC State for Tennessee State in 1998 and worked there until his retirement in 2009. While he was an academic at heart, he was always drawn to athletics. "Television initiated and strengthened my interest in sports," Chesney wrote dur- ing his playing days at NC State. "The achievement of black athletes, in particular, inspired me to participate. I was an end, be- cause I was tall in junior high, but I played linebacker in high school. "Defense provided physical contact and the satisfaction of stopping the offense." A true scholar-athlete, Chesney didn't like the stigma that sometime followed athletes in the classroom. "I was always competing with myself to see if I could excel in the classroom as well," Chesney wrote. "I personally dis- liked the stigma of the dumb athlete and tried to be a good student as well. I had about decided against competing at the intercollegiate level, but being a black [stu- dent-athlete] at a predominantly white uni- versity offered me a challenge that quickly dispelled my idea of not playing. "I wanted to prove to myself that I could be a decent student as well as an athlete at North Carolina State." ■ You may contact Tim Peeler at tim_peeler@ncsu.edu.
