4 THE WOLVERINE MAY 2017 ACCURATELY PEGGING PELINKA Dear The Wolverine: I quite enjoyed reading the news of Rob Pelinka's hiring as the Los Angles Lakers general manager in the April 2017 issue of The Wolver- ine. This article incorrectly stated, though, "He was a redshirt member of the 1989 national championship U-M team …" The unique aspect of Pelinka's time at U-M is that he did indeed play on the 1988-89 team (even starting one game as a true freshman on a star- studded roster packed with future NBA players) and took the uncon- ventional redshirt (due to injury) his second season (1990-91). That sidestep allowed him to be part of five squads and go to multi- ple Final Fours. As correctly noted in your story, his final two teams (1991- 92 and 1992-93) made the champi- onship game. Thus, Pelinka became the only player in Michigan basket- ball history to reach the pinnacle of NCAA basketball on three occasions. Though Pelinka's classmates, Eric Riley and James Voskuil, were also members of all five of those talented teams, they redshirted their true freshman seasons and received 1989 championship rings. Pelinka, though, was the only freshman to see game action that season, setting his accomplishment apart. The title game trifecta is a feat that will most likely never be repli- cated. Now Pelinka is the first former Michigan player to ascend to the rank of NBA general manager and may be the initial letterman to become a GM of any professional sports team, making him one of the most accom- plished athletic alumni in the Wol- verines' storied history. Ed McArdle Saginaw, Mich. Thanks, Ed, and good catch on Pelinka's unique playing experience in his Michigan career.
