York WJST.............. 1280-AM........................Youngstown, Ohio man Lamont Wade. He's playing really well. And we're starting to get Amani Oruwariye back as well, so Amani is doing really well. We have four guys who I'm feeling really good and positive [about] who are having great spring [practices] so far." The changes haven't been confined to the offensive line and secondary. The Nittany Lions' single biggest off-season loss was wideout Chris Godwin, who led the team in receiving the past two years before announcing in January that he would forgo his final season to enter the NFL DraA. The Lions return six wideouts who caught at least one pass last season, so the receiver corps does appear to have the depth to make up for Godwin's exit. The coaches have been looking for some playmakers to step forward this spring, and that appears to be exactly what has happened with redshirt sophomore Juwan Johnson. In his debut season, Johnson caught only two passes for 70 yards, but the for- mer four-star prospect from Glassboro, N.J., has been hailed as a potential game- breaker, and by all accounts he seized his opportunity this spring. "He has just has taken a very mature approach, very aggressive approach all off-season," Franklin said. "He red- shirted as a freshman, played a little bit as a [redshirt] freshman and now he's had to figure it out what he needs to do to be successful with our team, what he needs to do to have a bigger role, what are his strengths and what are his weak- nesses. He's a mature guy and a smart guy. So he's really made a significant jump from the end of the season until now." Johnson is one of the rising stars who are expected to see plentiful action on Saturday. With fellow wideout Saeed Blacknall likely to miss the game due to a leg injury, Johnson and other young wideouts like Irvin Charles and Dae'Lun Darien will have a chance to show Penn State fans what they can do. The coaching staff is hoping that those players will help entice a record crowd to the stadium for Franklin's fourth spring game as head coach. The staff will be welcoming dozens of recruits in the classes of 2018, '19 and '20 to University Park, and they want to make a favorable impression. A record-breaking crowd would help Penn State maintain the mo- mentum it built last year with its Big Ten championship joyride. "A lot of people say, 'Why is spring game attendance a big deal?' I would make the argument that, No. 1, it's an op- portunity to get together with your bud- dies. I kind of look at it as a homecoming during the spring," Franklin said. "I think it does make a statement, nationally, that football is important at Penn State. I think it shows our players that we're all in this thing together. "It makes a statement to our recruits, it makes a statement to our team and it makes a statement to the country that football is a very, very important part of Penn State. No more important than anything else, but an important part of what Penn State is all about." After redshirting last season, fresh- man offensive line- men Michal Menet (left) and Will Fries will be making their Penn State debuts in the Blue-White Game on Saturday. Photo by Nate Bauer
