On March 26, the Notre Dame community mourned
the death of longtime Notre Dame football announcer
and WNDU sports director Jeff Jeffers. He was 64.
Born on Jan. 23, 1953 — the exact same day as former
USC quarterback, football commentator and former
Trojans athletics director Pat Haden, which they often
joked about — the Neosho, Mo., native Jeffers earned his
undergraduate degree at the University of Tulsa before
embarking on his journey and passion at the University
of Notre Dame, where he earned his master's in commu-
nications while also working at the campus television
station WNDU.
During Notre Dame's march to the 1977 national title,
Jeffers filled in for sports director Tom Dennin, who was
stricken with a health setback, and that would begin his
40-year career with the local news station, which earned
him the title "The Dean of Local Sports."
Over the decades Jeffers would host the area's first
sports talk show as well as the Notre Dame Coach's
show, most notably with Lou Holtz from 1986-96.
His love of the university and devotion to it earned an
honorary monogram from the Notre Dame Monogram
Club in 2006 before being inducted into the Indiana
Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
A stroke in 2010 slowed Jeffers for a time. He returned
to the booth later in his career, but succumbed to recent
health setbacks.
