✦ TOP STORYLINES: NOTRE DAME VS. PURDUE suspension in the opener, a 48-6 victory against Eastern Kentucky. In his place, Marve completed 30 of 38 pass attempts for a career-high 295 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Henry completed 7 of 9 attempts for 77 yards with a TD and an interception, plus ran five times for 11 yards. However, Purdue head coach Danny Hope announced this week that TerBush will get the nod as the starter against the Irish. "We're in great shape," Hope said. "We're very fortunate to have three good, experienced, for the most part healthy quarterbacks — guys that all three of them are a big part of our game plan each week. "… But [TerBush] separated himself from the others. It would be to our best advantage, I believe, to start Caleb this weekend because I feel like a smooth start in the beginning of the game at South Bend could be very important to our football team. We're geared, from an offensive and a defensive and special teams standpoint, to be able to catch up if we get behind, but that certainly isn't our first choice on how to start the game. So my gut feeling is that we go in and start Caleb TerBush." Irish head coach Brian Kelly said the main things he knows is that with Ter- Bush in the lineup, Purdue will run the quarterback more, and move the pocket more, than Marve, and all three have dif- ferent strengths. "We'll attack the game plan knowing that we'll have to defend all [three], but Terbush will definitely be more involved in the running game than Marve was," Kelly said. Despite positing a pedestrian 16-21 record in his first three seasons, head coach Danny Hope was awarded a two-year contract extension. One year later, he was fired after a 5-6 mark. Alabama's Mike Shula was 10-2 in his third season (2005) and signed a six- year extension through 2011. He was fired a year later after finishing 6-6 and losing for the fourth straight season to Auburn. Nebraska's Bill Callahan improved to 9-5 in 2008 and inked a three-year exten- sion through 2011. Then he was fired a year later after posting a 5-7 ledger. Purdue's Danny Hope already was on the proverbial hot seat last year after opening with 5-7 and 4-8 records his first two seasons. Questions loomed about whether he would be axed after a 4-5 start in his third season, including a 24-22 up- set at Rice and a 38-10 blowout at home versus Notre Dame. Meanwhile, Purdue's average attendance dropped to 45,255 at home in 2011. However, a 26-23 overtime win against reeling Ohio State, an Oaken Bucket vic- tory versus Indiana and a bowl bid at 6-6 "kept Hope alive." On Dec. 23 he signed a two-year extension through Dec. 31, 2016. A 37-32 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl vic- tory over Western Michigan produced the 7-6 finish. "The development of a strong program requires perseverance and a willingness to critically address all aspects of our program each year, so we can amend and update our plan," Hope said in a prepared statement. "… It is nice to see some payoff for the work to date." Another losing season, though, might prove once again that contract extensions have a fickle nature. ✦
