(Outstanding Student-Athletes Cel- ebrating Achievement & Recognition Showcase) held May 4 at Purcell Pavilion, four Fighting Irish standouts shared the Byron V. Kanaley Award, considered perhaps the most prestigious honor to a student-athlete at the school. The award, selected by the Faculty Board of Athletics, goes to the senior monogram athletes who have been most exemplary as students and leaders. Ka- naley was a 1904 Notre Dame graduate who was a member of the Fighting Irish baseball team. He went on to a prosper- ous banking career in Chicago and served the University in the Alumni Association and as a lay trustee from 1915 until his death in 1960. The four recipients were: Lee Kiefer (fencing) — While leading the Irish to the national title, the Ver- sailles, Ky., native became the first Irish student-athlete to win four national championships in the same event (foil), and just the third four-time champion in collegiate fencing history. She also be- came the first American women's foilist to earn a No. 1 world ranking by the In- ternational Fencing Federation, and be- came the first American woman to win two Grand Prix gold medals. Kiefer also has been a CoSIDA Academic All-Ameri- can and ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Kaleigh Olmsted (soccer) — The three-year starter from The Wood- lands, Texas, was named to the All-ACC first team, ACC All-Tournament Team and All-ACC Academic Team. Also a participant in Notre Dame's Rosenthal Leadership Academy and a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, she formed her own fundraiser benefitting the Na- tional Eating Disorders Association called NoBody Is Perfect. S e rg i o Pe r ko v i c ( l a c ro s s e ) — A two-time All-American and three- time All-ACC selection that started every game in his four seasons while he helped lead the Irish as a peren- nial top-five program. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native's 110 career goals represent the most ever by a Notre Dame midfielder. He also has been a Senior CLASS Award finalist and a 2017 Weaver-James-Corrigan Award recipient. Monica Robinson (tennis) — From Valley Center, Calif., Robinson has won in 132 combined singles and doubles matches in her four years at Notre Dame, most of them in singles play. She has ranked as high as No. 10 nationally in doubles. She likewise was a Rosenthal Leadership Academy participant and captain. Four Irish Student-Athletes Share Byron V.
