Just a few months removed from debuting on the cover of this very magazine, elite prospect Lamont Wade is already making it happen at Penn State. With a strong showing in spring practice, Wade has put himself in contention for a spot in the cornerback rotation. A December graduate of Clair- ton (Pa.) High, Wade enrolled at Penn State in time for the start of the spring semester and immediately backed up the 9ve-star reputation that preceded him. He didn't necessarily turn heads by throwing weight around in the Lasch Building and out- running everybody in Holuba Hall. Rather, it was his intensity, com- bined with his diligent ap- proach to workouts and steady improvement, that made strength and condi- tioning coach Dwight Galt take notice. "We 9rst tested him and he ran a 4.58 [in the 40-yard dash] and his technique was kind of shoddy," Galt said. "He didn't know how to get in his stance to start. I looked at him and kind of saw that 9re, but he didn't really back it up with the time. We had a really good speed [train- ing]. He embraced it, he paid attention, he worked hard at it and he really got some good gains."
