✦ NEWS & NOTES BY LOU SOMOGYI EVERETT GOLSON DOING 'HOUSEKEEPING' When then first-year Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly took his team to Spartan Stadium in 2010, junior quarterback Dayne Crist was making his first road start. Crist put on an exceptional perfor- mance, completing 32 of 55 pass attempts for 369 yards with four touchdowns and one interception, but Notre Dame lost on the game's final play in overtime off a fake field goal by Michigan State. Sophomore quarterback Everett Golson isn't quite making his first road start at Notre Dame in East Lansing. Technically, it came in Ireland on Sept. 1 against an outmatched Navy team, but it literally was on friendly Irish soil. Golson's first "true" on-campus road start will be in Spartan Stadium, where a much more hostile and raucous atmo- sphere awaits along with a veteran defense that ranked sixth nationally last year. Physically, Kelly believes Golson is up to the task the way Crist was a couple of years ago, especially after a quality per- formance in last week's 20-17 victory ver- sus Purdue when he completed 21 of 31 passes for 289 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Plus, Golson ran for another score and extended pass plays with his mobility. Kelly noted that Golson made only one really poor throw against the Boilermak- ers, a slant to senior Robby Toma. "We are pleased with where he's at, and he's living up to what we thought he could do," Kelly said. "But we have a lot to do with the mental part of the game." The Irish burned several timeouts against Purdue while trying to get the of- fense properly aligned and communica- tion on one page. Consequently, with zero timeouts left against Purdue, the score Golson will try to become the first Irish quarterback to make his first career on-campus road start in Spartan Stadium and come out a winner since Ron Powlus achieved the feat in 1994. ✦ PAGE 11 PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA tied at 17 and only 2:12 remaining in the contest — plus a thumb injury to Golson — Kelly had a greater comfort level going with junior Tommy Rees to operate the of- fense and set up the game-winning score. Kelly's preference is to not have to go to his bullpen to relieve Golson. "Some of it is housekeeping — getting the play, getting it communicated, all of those things, which he's learning," Kelly said. "And he's seeing it for the first time, He's looking at it, and he's going, 'Wow, it took me seven seconds to actually get up there, maybe I need to speed up my housekeeping.' "Getting the play, verbalizing it, getting everybody set, making sure everybody is set … I'd rather be doing that, than worry- ing about whether my quarterback has the physical ability to play the position." Adding to potential communication is- sues is the road crowd will make it more difficult for the quarterback to verbally connect with his linemen, backs and receivers. What Notre Dame will practice with this week is universal in football: crowd noise will be piped in at the practices. Silent snap counts or indicators will be used. Communication along the sideline is expected to be more streamlined. "My track record has been such that on the road, we have handled those situations pretty good, but we'll have to work on them as well," Kelly said. Golson will attempt to break a three- game losing streak for Notre Dame quar- terbacks who make their first career road start in Spartan Stadium. The others were Crist (34-31 in overtime in 2010), Gary Godsey (27-21 in 2000) and Jarious Jackson (45-23 in 1998).
