COMPLIANCE CORNER ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIP BENEFITS FROM AN The University of Virginia would like to help clarify the NCAA's definition of "established relationships" and extra benefits between prospective student-athletes or current student-athletes and donors of the University of Virginia sports programs (e.g., boosters, season ticket holders, etc.). NCAA legislation prohibits student-athletes from receiv- ing preferential treatment, benefits or services because of the individual's athletics reputation or skill or pay-back potential as a professional athlete, unless such treatment, benefits or services are specifically permitted under NCAA legislation. Further, the NCAA defines an "extra benefit" as a benefit that is pro- vided to a prospective student-athlete or current student-athlete that is not available to the general public. NCAA legislation states that individuals other than family members or legal guardians, that are considering providing benefits or services to prospective student-athletes or student-athletes, must have their relationship reviewed to determine its permissibility. The key as to whether or not the benefit or service can be provided is based on the longevity of the relationship and types of benefits and/or services that were provided during the relationship. To help determine this, the UVa Compliance Office has created a form that must be completed and reviewed by the Compliance Office prior to providing the benefit or service to any prospective student-athlete or current student-athlete. Please contact us at athleticscompliance@virginia.edu to complete the form. The failure to adhere to this policy and complete the "Established Relationship" form may cause the prospective student-athlete or current student-athlete to become ineligible under NCAA rules. Further, it may cause supporters to become disassociated (i.e., lose season tickets, parking, etc.) from the Uni- versity of Virginia athletics program. The UVa Compliance Office appreciates your cooperation and understanding as we look to ensure the NCAA guidelines regarding benefits are being followed. Your donation to the Virginia Athletics Foundation, no matter how big or small is HOOS IN? ARE YOU? significant to the Virginia athletics programs.
