✦ NEWS & NOTES Senior tight end Tyler Eifert and ND's other skill position players had plays taped to their wristbands against MSU because the signals the Irish usually send from the sidelines may have been compromised. PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA gan State was the first time since Oct. 8, 1983 that the Irish won a regular-season game against a top-10 opponent, at night and on the road. On that night 29 years ago, Notre Dame defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks 30-6. For years, the Notre Dame football media guide listed the Gamecocks as ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press poll. However, it was recently discovered by a BlueandGold.com reader that South Carolina was 3-2 go- ing into to the contest and consequently unranked. Therefore, upon further review, the victory at MSU last weekend was the first time in Notre Dame history that the Irish won a regular-season night game on the road against a team ranked in the AP top 10. They previously had been 0-9 in their history in such contests. • After getting named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of The Week against Michigan State for his inspired performance during the week that he lost his girlfriend and grandmother to death, senior linebacker Manti Te'o needs eight more tackles to crack the top five on Notre Dame's all-time tackles list. The 354 by Te'o so far are behind Bob Crable (521, 1978-81), Bob Golic (479, 1975-78), Steve Heimkreiter (398, 1975-78), Bob Olson (369, 1967-69) and Tony Furjanic (361, 1982-85). • Notre Dame's skill position players on offense had plays taped to their wristbands in large part because former Notre Dame strength and conditioning assistant Lorenzo Guess is now with the Spartans, and head coach Brian Kelly said the signals Notre Dame sends from the sidelines might have been compromised. Whether he will continue using that method is uncertain. "We'll keep it as a possibility," Kelly said. • Reports this weekend surfaced about Notre Dame's 2014 meeting with Connecticut MISCELLANEOUS NOTES • Last week it was much publicized that Notre Dame's 20-3 victory at then-No. 10 Michi- potentially being played at Fenway Park, the home of the Boston Red Sox. Kelly said he wasn't sure the stadium was large enough to comfortably and safely fit a football field, but as a Massachusetts native he thought it would be "cool." Notre Dame athletics direc- tor Jack Swarbrick indicated later that published reports about the deal were inaccurate. ✦ PAGE 12
