42 ■ THE WOLFPACKER Cullen Jones Men's Swimming, 2003‑06 • Tabbed the ACC Swimmer of the Year in 2006 after winning the na- tional title in the 50-yard freestyle. • Was an All-American in the 50- yard freestyle in 2005 and a five- time ACC champion, including three times in the 50 free (2004-06). • Named the ACC Championship MVP in 2006. • After NC State, participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. • Won gold medals in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay in 2008 and the 4x100-meter medley relay in 2012. Captured silver med- als in the 50-meter free and the 4x100- meter free relay in London. • Once held the American record in the 50-meter freestyle. 1983 Men's Basketball Team • Won the NCAA Tournament cham- pionship game when forward Lorenzo Charles dunked home a missed shot by guard Dereck Whittenburg as time expired to upset heavily favored Houston. • Team became famously known as the "Cardiac Pack." • Subject of a popular ESPN 30 For 30 documentary called "Survive and Advance." • Won the ACC Tournament championship. • Were led by a senior class that included two-time All-ACC forward Thurl Bailey and an All-ACC backcourt of Sidney Lowe (first team in 1983) and Whittenburg (sec- ond team in 1982). • Finished the year 26-10 overall, and no NC State team since then has won as many games or advanced to a Final Four. Rodney Monroe Men's Basketball, 1988‑91 • Was a two-time Associated Press and Sporting News All-American (1990 and 1991). • Named the ACC Player of the Year in 1991 and was a first-team All-ACC choice in 1989. • Is NC State's all-time leading scorer with 2,551 points. • Also has the most three-pointers made in a game (nine) and season (104), is sec- ond all time in three-pointers made in a career (322) and is third all time in free throw percentage (88.5 percent). • Led the ACC in scoring at 27.0 points per game as a senior, second best in a sin- gle season in school history. • Had a career-high 48 points in a win over Georgia Tech in 1991, the fourth-most ever scored in a game by a Wolfpacker.
