Major League Baseball RICH HILL RETURNS FROM HIS LATEST INJURY Former Michigan pitcher Rich Hill had pitched in only 32 games with the Boston Red Sox in parts of three years before going back to the dis- abled list with a strained flexor ten- don in June. That followed shoulder surgery and Tommy John surgery, two operations from which many might not return. He returned from the 60-day DL hav- ing not pitched since June 8 and sub- sequently appeared in six straight games without allowing a run, giv- ing up only one hit over three and a third innings. He pitched eight minor league games as part of his rehab. "Everything has been feeling good," he told the Boston Globe shortly after his return. "I've been able to go out there and pitch with conviction and have the ball go the way I want and have it come out of my hand the way I want it to. "With all the work you put in in the Hill, though, never had a doubt. • Charles Woodson (1995-97), CB, offseason and the work that goes into coming back and then having a set- back like this, it is frustrating, no doubt about it. You see how hard you work to come back and to have something happen, I guess it's part of the game. You continue on and keep going out there and pitching with conviction." Hill began his career as a starter, but he's since become a middle re- liever. He's found a niche as a side- armer, hopeful he'll have a long ca- reer in that role. "That's what I want to do," he said. "I want to pitch for a long time. That would be great. The more you can keep yourself in shape or keep your- self competitive and work hard in the offseason and put in the time in the weight room and with your throwing program and be smart about it, you can maintain your body and hang around for a long time. "I love throwing out of the bullpen. I love the intensity. Now, I just need to stay healthy."
