Whenever a team has to replace more than 75 percent of its starting lineup, there are bound to be a few bumps in the road. Jim Harbaugh is an elite coach and he's bringing in elite talent, but it might not look like it right out of the gate next fall. The young Michigan team could very well win its first four to six games, but start- ing off inside the national top 10 just isn't fair to other teams who are more proven and ready from day one. Michigan could be undefeated or sitting on just a loss or two head- ing into the regular-season finale with Ohio State, at which time a top-10 ranking would be a certainty. But when the Wolverines take the field against Florida Sept. 2, a number in the 11-18 range beside their name is more fitting. Wolverines Will Be Top-10 Worthy By John Borton Let's agree to the obvious right up front. Losing 19 players to the NFL — via the draft and free agent signings — is a big deal. That said, Jim Harbaugh and his crew haven't exactly been building behind those players with cardboard cutouts. Here are three reasons the Wolverines could make a preseason top-10 case: One, they have a returning starting quarter- back in redshirt junior Wilton Speight, who took them within five points of an undefeated record last year. Two, the revamped defense is retooling with "backups" like sophomore defensive end Rashan Gary and fifth-year senior defensive tackle Maurice Hurst Jr., not to mention a host of other talent, much of which saw the field last year. Three, they've got some of the best coaches in the game in Harbaugh, defensive coordinator Don Brown, offensive coordinator Tim Drevno, etc. If they get by Florida in the opener, they are likely to be 6-0 going into the back half of a schedule that grows much tougher — at Penn State, at Wisconsin, Ohio State at home. But by then even the inexperienced will have grown up a lot, rendering top-10 status reasonable. POINT ❙ COUNTERPOINT DOES MICHIGAN DESERVE A TOP-10 PRESEASON RANKING? Despite sending 19 players to the NFL off the 2016 roster, the cupboard is not bare for head coach Jim Harbaugh. PHOTO BY PER KJELDSEN
