AUGUST 2017 THE WOLVERINE 33 BY CHRIS BALAS F reshman track standout Jade Harrison didn't come to Michigan with the goal to break records, but it was probably inevitable. Her primary objective was to fit in, continue to improve and — if all fell into place — reap the team and indi- vidual benefits. "She's like the team," head coach James Henry said last win- ter. "She's improving; she's a good athlete. She's not chasing records … she just wants to get better." It had become clear long before, however, that Henry had something special to mold. He was one of the reasons Harrison came to Michigan from California's Bay Area, and he's lived up to everything Harrison was looking for in a mentor. Had it not been for her childhood friend's parents, though, Harrison would likely be smashing records for a California school. Both of them graduated from U-M, and their pas- sion for the school piqued the sprint- er's interest. Harrison knew her path to Ann Arbor literally rested on her own two legs, but she also had the luxury of knowing what she wanted at a young age.
