PHOTO COURTESY MICHIGAN ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS DIRECTORS' CUP Michigan landed just outside the top five nationally in the rankings de- termined by a points system involv- ing the top 10 varsity sports for each gender over the course of the year. The Wolverines put 1,133.25 points on the board, well behind perennial win- ner Stanford (1,563.00), but not far be- hind No. 5 North Carolina (1,154.00). Ohio State finished second behind BY JOHN BORTON M ichigan athletics featured a wild ride in 2016-17, from a near miss on a national championship in women's cross country to a basketball plane scare turned Big Ten title and beyond. Individual accomplishments abounded, while team high- lights included elite national finishes, Big Ten championships and a sixth-place finish in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings for the best overall athletic department.
