6 ◆ CAVALIER CORNER GETTING TO KNOW THIRD-YEAR OUTSIDE HITTER HARLEY SEBASTIAN CAVALIER SPORTS This fall, third-year outside hitter Harley Sebas- tian will be asked to help lead the way for a young Virginia volleyball squad. In 32 matches last season, Sebastian registered 80 kills. All told, the Atlanta native accounted for a total of 87 points and also was credited with a dozen assists. Those numbers were even more noteworthy considering she was one of the younger Cavaliers on the team. In fact, when the 2017 season rolls around, Sebastian will be one of only two return- ing upperclassmen. Overall, Sebastian has 92 kills in only 43 career matches. As a second-year, Sebastian played in 23 of Vir- ginia's 32 matches and recorded a career-high 12 kills against Notre Dame on Nov. 13, 2016. Moreover, as a first-year, Sebastian only had 12 kills, which makes last season's number more in- dicative of her improvement. Sebastian came to Virginia from the Lovett School where she was a 2014 Under Armour All- American, the 2014 Georgia AA GVCA Player of the year and a three-time first-team all-state selection. Sebastian comes from an athletic family. Her fa- ther, Dr. Michael Sebastian, was a defensive tackle on the 1978 University of Alabama team that cap- tured the national championship. In addition, one of her two older brothers, Parker, was an offensive tackle for Harvard when the Crimson captured Ivy League titles in 2011 and 2013. My advice to student-athletes is: Do not pro- crastinate. Stay on top of your work. Don't watch movies, but do your homework first. Prioritize your work and get ahead in class, especially during your season. The best advice I've received and from whom: Always to give 110 percent, especially when no- body is looking from my dad. The primary challenge facing student-ath- letes is: Time constraints comprise the primary challenge. The best thing about UVA is: The people. Why I chose UVA: The campus is beautiful, plus the coaches, the players and the great education. What I like the most about volleyball: The teamwork aspect. The highlight of my athletic career: This past season when the team beat Notre Dame and Lou- isville back to back. The most important thing I've learned from volleyball is: Discipline. My dream vacation would be: Australia. My post-college ambition is: I would like to work in public relations or advertising. — Mike Scandura Sebastian averaged 1.23 kills per set dur- ing the first two years of her college career.
