8 ◆ CAVALIER CORNER CAVALIER SPORTS AROUND THE GROUNDS "Few players in the nation were busier than linebacker Micah Kizer and free safety Quin Blanding, the top tackling tandem in the ACC. Kiser led the league and was third in the nation with 134 stops. Blanding was second in the league and 16th in the nation with 120. Both flirted with entering the NFL Draft before opting to return. While that's good for Virginia, it would be even better if they didn't have to be quite so productive this year." — Athlon Sports 2017 College Football Preview on the Cavaliers, who they ranked 87th nationally "We are incredibly excited to welcome Amadine Toi to our 2017 Wahoo class. Amadine's athleticism and experience will bring more depth to our backcourt. She is a fierce competitor and has great international experience that will translate to the fast pace play of ACC basketball." — Women's basketball head coach Joanne Boyle on the addition of incom- ing freshman Amandine Toi, a 5-11 shooting guard who plays for France's U19 Junior National Team "The senior has yet to play in a bowl, but he has been one of the best DBs in the ACC since his freshman year." — Street & Smith's 2017 College Football Preview on naming safety Quin Blanding the hardest hitter in the ACC; the magazine named him and line- backer classmate Micah Kiser preseason All-ACC ◆ Aug. 31, 1989 — The Cavaliers play a football game in August for the first time in school history. Although they lose to No. 2 Notre Dame 36-13 in the Kickoff Classic in East Rutherford, N.J., they win the next four games and 10 of the 11 other regular-season contests. That allows George Welsh's 10-2, ACC co-championship squad to play in the Florida Citrus Bowl. No. 15 Virginia falls to No. 11 Illinois in that one, 31-21, but they finished the year ranked No. 18 by the Associated Press. ◆ Aug. 26, 1995 — For the first time in program history, Virginia plays a football game with more than 100,000 people in attendance. It came in an 18-17 loss AT MICHIGAN in front of 101,444 fans. Seven years later, on Nov. 9, 2002, the Cavaliers broke the school record by playing in front of 108,698 at Penn State in a 35-14 victory. I can already see it happening in the summer, and I'm so thankful that they're here. They're having an amazing experience already, which is rewarding as a coach." — Head football coach BRONCO MENDENHALL on redshirt fourth-year offensive linemen Brandon Pertile (formerly of Oklahoma State) and John Montelus (Notre Dame) at ACC Kickoff July 14
