✦ OPPONENTS RECAP BY STEVE DOWNEY trouncing of VMI Sept. 22 … Navy rushed for 403 yards, led by sophomore Noah Copeland's 126 on 20 carries …Junior quarterback Trey Miller lost a pair of fumbles in the first quarter, but bounced back to rush 17 times for 116 yards and three touchdowns (seven, one and 40 yards) while completing 7 of 14 passes for 107 yards … Senior linebacker Matt Warrick made four tackles and returned an intercep- tion seven yards for a score … Navy was blanked by San Jose State 12-0 this past Saturday … It marked the first time the Mids were shut out in six years and sent them to their first 1-3 start since 2002 … Navy only managed 144 total yards of offense, including just 70 on the ground … Sopho- more cornerback Parrish Gaines compiled a team-best 12 tackles in the losing effort. NAVY (1-3) The Midshipmen broke into the win column with a 41-3 PURDUE (3-1) The Boilermakers enjoyed a week off Sept. 22 and then outscored Marshall 51-41 this past weekend … Fifth-year senior quarterback Caleb TerBush and an opportunistic defense helped build a 42-14 halftime lead, and PU was able to withstand a furious second-half rally by the Herd … TerBush connected on 27 of 37 throws for 294 yards with four touchdowns and one pick … Junior wideout Gary Bush was on the receiving end of three of those scoring passes (nine, 35 and seven yards) and finished with seven catches for 83 yards … The Purdue defense forced four turnovers, and junior cornerback Ricardo Allen and senior cornerback Josh Johnson returned interceptions 39 and 74 yards, re- spectively, for touchdowns in the second quarter … Allen's pick-six was the fourth of his career, setting a school record and putting him second on the Big Ten's all-time list. Sept. 22 … The Eagles led 7-6 late in the third quarter, but MSU scored 17 unanswered points over the final 16 minutes to pull away … Junior running back Le'Veon Bell rushed 36 times for a career-best 253 yards and a touch- down, while junior tight end Dion Sims recorded his first career 100-yard receiving game with six receptions for 112 yards and a score … Junior safety Isaiah Lewis paced the MSU defense with 12 tackles … The Spartans dropped out of the rankings after being edged by No. 12 Ohio State 17-16 last Saturday … Senior kicker Dan Conroy made field goals from 34, 50 and 48 yards, but missed a 42-yarder in MICHIGAN STATE (3-2) The Spartans fought off feisty Eastern Michigan 23-7 the second quarter that proved costly … Bell set career highs for receptions (eight) and receiving yards (58), but managed just 45 rushing yards on 17 carries and was held out of the end zone … Senior linebacker Max Bullough led the defense with 12 stops and a forced fumble.
