On the eve of Notre Dame's Sept. 2 opener at home versus Temple, former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be a featured speaker at the unveiling of a new U.S. Postal Service stamp honoring the late Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh C.S.C., Notre Dame's president from 1952‑87 and a key figure in Civil Rights legislation. The ceremony will be at 1 p.m. at Notre Dame's Purcell Pavilion (the basketball arena) and will be free and open to the public. Rice earned a master 's degree from Notre Dame in 1975, was the provost at Stanford University from 1993‑2001, and then became National Security Advisor (2001‑05) and Secretary of State (2005‑09) under the administration of President George W. The stamp will feature an oil‑on‑panel painting image of Hesburgh standing on the Notre Dame campus, with the Golden Dome of the Main Building visible behind him. Former Notre Dame basketball coach Digger Phelps (1971‑91), who once served on the Postal Service's Citizens' Stamp Advisory Com‑ mittee, will emcee the event. Notre Dame has been recognized by the U.S. Postal Service on three previous occasions: 1988 with a stamp honoring famed football coach Knute Rockne on the centennial of his birth; 1992 with a post‑ card celebrating the university's sesquicentennial; and 1998 with a stamp of the famous football backfield known as the Four Horsemen.
