ZH7Z IDBGQ317 FORMER IRISH PLAYER SUING UNIVERSITY Former Notre Dame linebacker Doug Randolph, who played for the Irish from 2013‑16, is suing the university, alleging results of an MRI were concealed, accord‑ ing to a report by Laken Litman and Mark Alesia of The Indianapolis Star. According to the lawsuit and The Indianapolis Star report, Randolph alleges he experienced numbness in his upper extremities after being hit during a practice drill in September 2015. The lawsuit says Randolph informed trainer Rob Hunt of the issue, but Hunt dismissed Randolph's claim of injury and returned him to practice shortly after. Randolph was cleared to continue playing during the 2015 season, according to the lawsuit and The Indianapolis Star, after an MRI. Randolph claims the symptoms gradually worsened throughout the season and he would experience those after each hit and contact on the field. Randolph competed throughout the rest of the season and in the team's 44‑28 loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. During that game, he said he went numb in both arms and legs. He again made Hunt aware of the issue, according to the lawsuit and The Indianapolis Star, but was dismissed and told to keep playing. Following the Fiesta Bowl, Randolph had another MRI that resulted in a spinal stenosis diagnosis. Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly is among those named in the suit, according to The Indianapolis Star. "We will respond in full to these claims in court, but what we can say with cer‑ tainty is that nothing is more important to Notre Dame than the safety and well‑ being of our students," Notre Dame vice president of public affairs Paul Browne said in a statement. "With that in mind, we believe our athletics doctors and train‑ ers are second to none and we are completely confident that these health care professionals provided proper medical care to the plaintiff in this case. "We are equally confident that the allegations made in this lawsuit are baseless."
