Interestingly, the junior Watters entered the Orange Bowl that season against No. 1 Colorado with 788 rush- ing yards, but was sidelined with a relatively minor injury after his second carry. Head coach Lou Holtz opted to insert flanker Raghib "Rocket" Ismail in his place — and he proceeded to be named MVP with 108 rushing yards, including a 35-yard touchdown in the 21-6 Notre Dame victory. Rice easily holds the top two single- season rushing totals in Notre Dame history among quarterbacks with 934 in 1989 and 775 a year earlier for the national champions. In third place is Carlyle Holiday, who totaled 666 in 2001 during a 5-6 campaign. Current NFL rookie starter De- Shone Kizer is the only other former Irish quarterback to exceed 500 rush- ing yards in a season with his 520 in 2015. ✦ M A R K E T P L A C E MEMORABILIA TICKETS ST. Call 800-421-7751 RUN EFFICIENCY NUMBERS In coaching analytics, an "efficient run" is de- fined as one that goes at least four yards, one that picks up a first down or one that results in a touchdown. Therefore, if it's third-and-one and the run- ner gains three yards, it is an efficient run. If the carrier scores from one yard out, it's con- sidered an efficient run. The standard to be considered a "good run- ning team" is 60 percent efficiency. Despite rank- ing No. 5 nationally in rushing yardage (330.7 yards per game) after the first three games this season, Notre Dame was not quite yet defined a good running team by these analytics. Notre Dame was at 56.0 percent for the season: • 116 called runs • 55 gains of four yards or more • Seven touchdowns of three yards or less • Three first-down runs of three yards or less Notre Dame was at 61.5 percent against Temple: • 39 called runs • 20 runs of four yards or more • Two touchdowns of three yards or less • Two first-down runs of three yards or less Notre Dame was at 33.3 percent against Georgia: • 33 called runs • Nine runs of four yards or more • One touchdown of three yards or less • One first-down run of three yards or less Notre Dame was at 66.7 percent against Bos- ton College: • 45 called runs • 26 runs of four yards or more • Four touchdowns of three yards or less • Zero first-down runs of three yards or less — Bryan Driskell
