2014 running back chooses PSU RYAN SNYDER | B L U E WH I T E I L L U S T R A T E d While Penn State looks to find the pound final few pieces for its Class of 2013, the coaching staff got a head start on next year's class when DeMatha run- ning back Mark Allen verbally committed to Bill O'Brien and his staff Oct. 15. The 5-foot-7, 185- prospect camped at Penn State this past summer, and he made it clear that if PSU follows through with an early offer, it would be hard to pass up. "Penn State has been his favorite ALLEN school all of his life," said Elijah Brooks, head coach at DeMatha. "That was a big reason for him camping up there this summer. The coaches loved him when he was up there. That trip just made him love Penn State even more. "O'Brien told him that they'd watch him during the beginning of his junior year and if they liked what they saw, Juco RB draws Penn State offer Penn State is making a push with another junior college prospect after recently offering a scholar- ship to running back Aaron Wim- berly of Iowa Western Community College. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound three- star prospect committed to Iowa State in August, but he said he'll be listening to what Penn State has to say over the next few months. "Penn State just offered tonight," Wimberly said Oct. 14. "I talked to Coach [Charlie] Fisher after he talked to my coaches. He was just basically telling me about his pro- gram and how I could potentially fit in with them. We were talking they'd offer him. So they stayed true to their word and that's all Mark was re- ally waiting on." So far this season, Allen has rushed for almost 700 yards and four touch- downs, while picking up interest from Maryland, West Virginia, North Car- olina and North Carolina State. "Despite his size, he's deceptively powerful," Brooks added. "We do a lot with him. We put him in the I-forma- tion and he runs tough, downhill, and makes it tough to bring him down. He has the explosiveness to break a play whenever. We're also able to put him in the slot, where he's great at blocking linebackers. He really does create a terrible matchup for them. "What really makes him a good player, though, is he's just a heck of a competitor." Allen ran a 4.43-second 40-yard dash at Penn State's camp over the summer. He currently has no immedi- ate plans to visit State College, but would like to get back to Happy Valley for the Wisconsin game Nov. 24. about the stadium, some of the other things they have to offer. Just really all about the program in general." While he said it's "too early to tell" if he'll visit Penn State, Wim- berly will take an official visit to Iowa State on Nov. 2. It's currently his only scheduled visit. "I'm not very familiar with Penn State, honestly," he said. "But I've seen them play on TV a few times, and they play in a great confer- ence in the Big Ten. I'm definitely interested." So far this season, Wimberly has rushed for 622 yards on 83 car- ries, good for an average of 7.5 yards per carry. He also has six touchdowns and fumbled the ball just once. Penn State has also offered quar- terback Jake Waters, Wimberly's teammate at Iowa Western. - R.S.
