www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 23, 2017 17 UNDER THE DOME 85 Years Ago: Oct. 15, 1932 Two unbreakable school records were set during Notre Dame's 63-0 victory against Drake. The first was 629 rushing yards by head coach Hunk Anderson's Fighting Irish. Although the "modern record" is listed as 597 versus Navy in 1969, this remains the highest recorded number at the school. Second, in the midst of The Great Depression, only 6,633 showed up in Notre Dame Stadium, which remains the record low for a game. 65 Years Ago: Oct. 18, 1952 In a bizarre outing, Notre Dame fumbles 10 times at No. 9 Purdue — but the Boiler- makers cough up the ball 11 times. The Irish end up recovering 15 of those 21 total mis- cues, including a touchdown by right tackle Joe Bush of a John Lattner fumble in the end zone during the 26-14 victory. In that same game, Lattner snares a 47- yard touchdown pass from Ralph Guglielmi on the last play of the first half to give the Irish a 20-7 lead. Lattner's five fumbles in the game have him scurrying afterward. "I didn't go back on the train with the team because I figured Coach [Frank] Leahy was going to throw me off of it," said Lattner, whose brother drove him home to Chicago before he reported back to classes for Monday. The following week, Leahy demands Lattner carry a football with him all week while attending classes or going anywhere else, otherwise lose his scholarship. 40 Years Ago: Oct. 22, 1977 In one of the most epic moments in Notre Dame Stadium history, the No. 11 Irish surprise everyone by wearing green jerseys for the first time since 1963 in their clash with No. 5 USC. Notre Dame then proceeds to end a three-game losing streak to the Trojans with a stunning 49-19 blowout that would help propel them to the national title (see more on pages 52-53). 15 Years Ago: Oct. 26, 2002 Labeled "The Savior of South Bend," first-year head coach Tyrone Willingham's Cinderella first season continues when his double-digit underdog Fighting Irish defeat No. 11 Florida State in Tallahassee, 34-24. The victory improves Notre Dame to 8-0 and elevates it to No. 4 in the country. Quarterback Carlyle Holiday connects with Arnaz Battle for a 65-yard touchdown on the game's first play, and a 10-10 tie in the third quarter is broken open when three straight FSU turnovers set up 17 Notre Dame points in a span of 4:23. A 31-yard touchdown scamper by running back Ryan Grant builds the lead to 34-10 early in the fourth quarter. "It means an eighth victory and one more step. That's all," the low-key Willingham said. "If you don't get the next one, what does it mean?" Oct. 13, 2012 A one-for-the-ages goal-line stand in overtime lifts No. 7 Notre Dame to a 20-13 victory versus No. 17 Stanford. With starting quarterback Everett Golson injured in the fourth quarter, junior Tommy Rees finishes a drive that results in a 22-yard Kyle Brindza field goal with 20 seconds left in regulation to knot the game. Rees then finds TJ Jones on a seven-yard touchdown pass to give the Irish a 20-13 Irish advantage in overtime before the Cardinal face first-and-goal at the 4-yard line on their series. Four straight thrusts into the line by running back Stepfan Taylor fall short of the goal line, although the fourth-down play is reviewed more than three minutes for confirmation. It is Notre Dame's first 6-0 start since 10 years earlier. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Oct. 13‑26 John Lattner had five fumbles versus Purdue in 1952, but did haul in a 47-yard scoring pass in Notre Dame's 26-14 victory.
